The *first* first issue. It was published in glorious techno-black & white by Mu Press in 1996 I think. The map of Rain City that forms the background is a spoof of Seattle. At the time I drew the map, and the comic, I had never been to Seattle and hadn't seen any photos of it either. If you notice any discrepancies between my take and reality, keep them to yourself. I have been to Rain... I mean Seattle several times since. Most of the place names on this map are in-jokes, based on other artists well known at the time. (This particular scan happens to be by Jeff Wood rather than myself. Perhaps I'll replace it in time.)
Beatrix was the creation of Steve Gallacci, who began to write for the character a couple of years before the book was done. He farmed the original origin story to one Cindy Murata. As far as it went -- six pages I think -- it was published in the funny animal apa, Rowrbrazzle. I don't know if Steve meant it to go any further at the tme. But later he talked to me about re-doing the first few pages and continuing the story at book lenght. In the end, he wrote most of the issue. I followed his script almost literally for the first half. Thereafter I began to tinker more with the story, and by the end I think we were responsible for the words about 50/50. Long before then, layout and break-down had become entirely mine.

I planned to continue publishing with Shanda Fantasy Press for a while, but the negotiations started to get complicated. The wanted regular schedules that I felt I was unable to meet, and suggestions that I have other artists undertake inking or lettering didn't go down with me well either. In the end, nothing came of it. Had we been talking thousands of dollars per book, I'd have found a way. But we were talking about hudreds... and the number could be counted on one hand. So other work pushed Bea into the background where she and my folder full of ideas remains to this day. Blame it partly on my neurotic need to do all the work myself, but also on the failure of furry comics (on the whole) to break out of their ghetto and reach significant numbers of readers.
I quote a sentence from an old anime:"Dying soon is not pleasing, but even living too long is very bothering!".
And it's true. The fear for death make immortality look like wonderful, but when/if brain take over fear you realize that being immortal means you have to see all of your best friends and beloved ones get old die before your eyes, and even if can somehow make new ones, you know since the beginning you are doomed to see them elding and dying.
As if it wasn't enought, poor Beatrix can't even enjoy life in a phisical sense, since she can't taste food, have sex (nor even masturbation) or feeling touch.
I bet after some years of all this Death wold be more than welcome, if it was possible (Hey! Have you ever thought about a Beatrix/Jack crossover? And I mean Jack the grim reaper).
