I was not always into video games. When I was young I was more into Comics and Cartoons, my only exposure to video games was through my cousin's NES and his library consisted of terrible movie tie in games. Things like Robocop, Total Recall and Ghostbusters. Sure Super Mario bros was fun but these other games were frustrating, hard and we would kind of give up after a while.
Eventually I got an SNES and was introduced to more games. Once ever few months we would get a rent two get one free coupon from Ken's World of Video and I would get to rent a game. I was just starting to get into RPGs with Secret of Mana, Illusion of Gaia and Mystic Quest. I remember vividly Dragon Ball was starting to airing on UPN ( along with Sailor Moon and Ronin Warriors ) and I picked up Chrono Trigger because the art style was similar and with that my fate was sealed.
There was not a single thing I didn't love about this game. The characters, setting, music, gameplay, it had me hooked right from that hype ass intro. I am not going to be a contrarian and say Populous or Rampart got me into gaming, it was hands down Chrono Trigger. The down side to renting it though was people would overwrite your save file. So I asked Santa Claus to get it for me for Christmas and I played the hell out of that game.
New game plus blew my mind. The idea that I could carry over my level and all of my equipment into a brand new playthrough to get a completely new ending kept me coming back to that game for years.
I still have my original save file..... I really should replace the batteries in these cartridges soon.
