This piece starter out life as a 1930 FN Mauser in fair/poor condition. Probably paid $30 for the relic through a kitchen table FFL back in the 1980s when these were coming in from China. Then bought an Israeli .308 Winchester barrel kit from Sarco and had a local gunsmith swap it out. Pitting was bad along the wood-to-metal contact, but it was deemed safe to shoot. The barrel was cold blued by me. Later, the stock was upgraded and a turn-down bolt was fitted to get a K98k profile. A single-stage trigger may have been fitted as well.
I shoot handloaded 150-grain jacketed soft points--and similar bullets--with the rifle. From a steady bench rest, I can readily hit clay bird targets regularly at 100 yards using "iron sights" only. This is what gets lugged out into the woods each November. No fragile optics to get bumped out of zero.
