From October.
I found and edited some sketches with Ratt and Khai, and for some reason I wanted to show them. Actually, I've been thinking about completing some of them for a very long time, but a few things stopped me.
First of all, if I was going to show these sketches, I would have to work on an explanation. Secondly, although this story is not new at all (I started it back in 2022), it's still difficult for me to talk about some of its characters, and especially about Khai.
As I wrote once before, "Somber Side" is a kind of gloomy reflection of "Between Worlds", where similar events take place, but in a different environment and with a different message. Not all, but most of the main characters in this story are reflections of the characters in "Between Worlds". As for Khai, he's not only a reflection of original Khas, he's literally Khas. While all the other characters were born and lived in Wikersmaut, Khai wasn't a part of it. He came in this world because of a dubious deal with a powerful being he had previously helped, and was trapped here with no way out. Unfriendly, curse-ridden Wikersmaut became his cage, where he was forced to endlessly fight for his life. According to the terms of the deal, he was supposed to forget the misfortunes and grief he had experienced in the past. And he did forgot, because new, even more terrible misfortunes befell him.
At the beginning of the story, Khai has been wandering around Wikersmaut for many years. And the main characters (Aerys and Rattmarr) first encounter him in the cursed forest, where all their other comrades are dying. During this time, he managed to adapt to life in these lands, although they changed him. He's broken and cursed, but the main thing about him remains the same. This is the wanderer who will never pass by, no matter what his reasons are to show interest in lost travelers. So it's no surprise that he becomes a guide for Aerys, and later offers his help to Ratt, albeit indirectly and under certain conditions.
I wrote earlier that Ratt walked most of the way alone, and that's true. Khai never accompanied him, only gave him directions on where to go and then left him, so Ratt had to wade through the wilds and cope with the dangers lurking there on his own. And yet he had no choice but to agree, because even though he was a good pathfinder, he would hardly have been able to get out of the cursed lands without this (albeit not too generous) help.
It was an extremely bad deal. In part because he had to pay, and the price was high.
That's right, it was also a deal very similar to the one that made Khai a prisoner of Wikersmaut. But I prefer not to talk about the reasons why he played out a scenario so familiar to him, at least here and now.
Instead, I'll say a few words about the relationship between these two (Khai and Ratt), which I think is very interesting.
It's no exaggeration to say that they are hostile towards each other. Ratt thinks he hates Khai, Khai despises Ratt. They're like two enemies forced to cooperate, each for their own reasons. And in their tandem, Khai is a predator, while Ratt is a victim. For the time being, because Ratt, despite the fact he considers himself weak and cowardly, does not break. Khai is creating another problem for himself, which he will have to cope with in the future.
And perhaps it would seem strange if I say that there were moments of understanding and... almost support between these two? Their mutual dislike is caused more by the circumstances in which they meet and interact. I think at another time, in another place, they could have become friends.
Maybe, I'll tell you more about it one day.
As for the sketches, here are a few words about each one:
Sketch on the left: one of Khai's main symbols is a red fox, while Ratt's main symbol is a jackdaw (I think there's no need to add anything else)
Sketch on the right: just one tense moment when Ratt snaps at Khai who is taken aback for a few seconds, amazed by such rage from the person who has always been afraid of him. The reason why both of them look so strange will be explained here.
The next two sketch pages with them:

Gosh, I've said SO much! Thanks to those who read it! 💜
