It did not so much take a shared love of their home to unite the humans, dragons, and gryphons of Sakia, but a shared hatred of taxes.
With the Theskaian treasury drained by recent raids and tributary payments, and the Black Year of 683 M. looming on the horizon, the Anaxia chose to levy new taxes on the flocks and herds of Sakia. They needed to buy up food for stockpiles, and transport workers down to the province of Aikatos, which would remain fertile during the ash-clouded winter years to come. None of this could be done with an empty treasury, and so the Sakians, who had thus far been left largely unaffected by the decline throughout the rest of the Anaxia, were chosen to bear the burden.
The Sakians were reliant on herds for their survival, owing to the poor fertility of the mountainous region for agriculture, and the necessity of vast quantities of meat for the diets of dragons and gryphons. Such a tax, introduced right as the world was stockpiling food for the ash-clouded years of winter, enraged the myriad peoples of Sakia.
The brothers and Archons, Diernais and Rholes, travelled to the city of Theskai for an audience with the Anax. As he was out on campaign, they were directed instead to his son, the more brash and irritable junior Anax Gelasius. The brothers offered to gather recruits on behalf of the Anaxes—chimeras for the army and men to work the fields in Aikatos—in exchange for a repeal of the taxes. Gelasius, however, was not open to any negotiations, and his repeated refusals quickly drove Diernais to lose his patience. The Archon spat at the junior Anax, and threatened that they would resist the ‘theft’ of their herds by force, if necessary. Gelasius, in turn, ordered Diernais to be beaten severely, before expelling the brothers from the city.
When they returned to the city of Kaisela, the brothers were intent on making good on their threat, urging the people to take up arms. Yet many were reluctant at first, knowing the great power and terrible wrath of the Theskaian army, even in its weakened state. The brothers were undeterred, gathering together local leaders and commoners for a great meeting. On that day, an eclipse darkened the sky, which they played as God shutting his eye to the Theskaians, who claimed to be His representatives in the physical realm. When it opened, they continued, God’s blessing would pass from the Theskaians to them, the Sakians. They brought soothsayers to remind the people of a recent prophecy: that a leader would come from between the Pyrgous and Rakhia mountains to cleanse the greed and corruption of the Anaxia, destroying it, before remaking it anew.
With mere months before the volcano Kouhisi covered the world in ash once more, the Sakians set aside their differences in species and language to unite against the Theskaians, with Diernais and Rholes proclaimed as their new Anaxes.
hello it’s mr. procrastination again
