This is a collection of needlefelt fingerpuppets that I have made. We have from left to right, a red fox, a koala, a badger, and a chicken. I made this specifically with small children in mind so they have been made to be more durable, and they don't have beads or other parts that could prove to be a choking hazard.

your icon reminds me of Adventuretime or Flapjack for some reason *laughs hard*
I feel that needlefelting is actually really simple, but it's kind of an intuitive art - that is, if you know how to put shapes together its easier to needlefelt. (So I guess what I'm really saying is "majoring in sculpture has helped a lot" lol) Making the wireframe itself isn't that hard, it's just a little difficult to keep it in place during the felting process. That's why in my larger projects I've been wrapping them with a fiber-fill core; the core lets me use less felt, and keeps the wireframe steady while I work.
