Shiver stepped from his nest into a world coated in a soft white sheet.
He sniffed the foreign substance. It had almost no scent, only a thin, clean hint of water. Curious, he touched it with the tip of his tongue. For an instant, it burned cold, then melted into a tiny drop that tasted like nothing at all.
Above him, more flakes drifted down between dawn rays, slow and silent. One landed on his snout and vanished, leaving a single prick of chill behind.
Cautiously, Shiver took another step, then another, laying footprints across the virgin snow. He glanced upward; the world felt new, wrapped in a colder kind of dawn.
