Perhaps one of the strangest members of the Four Aces gang is the Ace of Diamonds, Silas Engels. Pushing 60 years of age by the events of the first novel, he is a soft-spoken, well-educated, eloquent, intelligent, patient, level-headed, curious, generous, and kind individual. And yet he could draw on you and cut you down quicker than any other beast roaming the plains. Though, if you aren't an asshole, a violent opponent, or someone with a broken heart whose greed or wrath consumed you, you likely have nothing to fear. He usually prefers to be excluded from whatever disaster the rest of the gang has cooked up, making his own clockwork plans to harm those who have it coming, steal from those who have too much, or staunch the pain inflicted by the cruel and powerful. Instrumental in John's recruitment from the circus, Silas taught the boy many of the skills he has and knowledge he retains. He built up where Tessa couldn't expand, including teaching John to read Latin (which he didn't retain). A highly religious beast, all of these things came together to make John wonder how a beast like him ends up in a line of work like this.
