Fallout: The Road to Ronto - Out of this World - Chapter 17
Rusty sighed sadly as she sat on the floor next to her resting pod.
The room/sleeping/charging pod her alien friend, savior, and trainer, Quen'thira, had given her was nice enough. It always seemed, no matter how sore she was, as soon as she entered it, and activated it, she fell asleep instantly. That, and she would always wake up fully rested and healed the next day.
No, the small pod wasn't making her sad. Nor the intense training over the past week.
She had thought she could handle the training Quen'thira had prepared for her.
How wrong she was.
Quen'thira had taken her to a larger, square room, the only square room on her ship, honestly, and had he stand in the middle of it.
“This is One's training room.” The tall alien explained as she gestured around it with her right hand. “This is where Rusty will train for the next two weeks.”
Rusty stretched her arms across her chest, one at a time and nodded. She was wearing her interface suit, and was eager to start training. “I've trained with the Institute for combat situations.”
Quen'thira looked down at her and smiled. “Did Rusty ever train against an army of Mutants before?”
Rusty shook her head no. “Uh, negative.”
Quen'thira walked out of the room, and the door closed behind her. A few moments later, she appeared in a viewing window 10 feet above Rusty. When she spoke, her voice came trough a hidden speaker. “One will start you on the lowest difficulty level.”
Suddenly, Rusty found herself on a platform suspended above a bottomless chasm. She gasped and looked forward. Spinning blades, spikes popping in and out of the ground, rapid hydraulic presses, random fire jets, and large gaps between the platform faced her.
“Safety features are on.” Quen'thira explained. “If Rusty is hit with a hazard, she will be sent back to the start. In order to end the training program and advance to the next stage, she will have to reach the goal 200 Terran meters away.”
Rusty nodded. “Affirmative.”
12 hours later Rusty limped back to her to her pod as she rubbed her right shoulder. She had managed to clear the first level in 4 tries, and progressed to the next level, which had more hazards, swinging ropes, and was 400 meters long. And even though the safety features were still on, being hit with a trap still hurt.
She opened the pod and climbed in.
Rusty sighed sadly again.
No, what was making her sad was her how much she was missing AJ, Kara and the others.
Mostly AJ and Kara.
Quen'thira walked up to Rusty and tilted her head. “Rusty? Why is she not in her pod? You need to rest. She faces the last level tomorrow.”
Rusty looked up at Quen'thira. “Yeah. I know. I'm just lonely.”
“Lonely.” The tall alien repeated. “She is missing her family.”
Rusty nodded sadly and buried her face in her knees. “Affirmative.”
“Would she like to speak with them?” Quen'thira asked kindly. “One could set up a private comms unit in her pod.”
Rusty whimpered. “That's very kind, Quen'thira. But, um, I miss being touched. I'm... a social creature... I need physical touch and contact.” She lifted her face and looked up at her friend. “I know I need to train... but can I go down to see my family?”
Quen'thira thought for a second. “One could send her down. Or, if AJ agrees, since she is going to assist Rusty with her mission, One could bring her up to One's ship.”
Rusty's jaw dropped. “You could?”
Quen'thira nodded. “Affirmative.”
The cat/otter/alien stood up. “I'll go ask her.”
“Rusty.” The alien girl said cautiously. “Give One a moment. Follower her to the bridge.”
The two girls walked to the bridge and over to the communication console. Quen'thira pressed a few buttons.
A life-sized, blue, translucent, hologram of AJ suddenly appeared in front of Rusty.
“Uh, Rusty?” AJ asked in shock. “How can I suddenly see ya? This here small little ball thing came into mah room, and...”
Rusty blinked and reached out and touched the solid hologram. “AJ...”
AJ blushed. “Sweets... I can feel yer hand. I've missed ya.” She looked her up and down. “Nice suit.” She narrowed her eyes. “You look different.”
“I am different.” Rusty admitted. “In order to heal me, Quen'thira had to make me a alien hybrid. Not scary different, I hope.”
“Nah. Just different, Sweets.” AJ smiled. “Why are ya calling?”
Rusty blushed. “I miss you. I asked Quen'thira if I could see you, in person, and she suggested you come up to her ship and train with me.”
“Say what?” AJ gasped.
“If you wanted, you can come-” Rusty to begin to say, but stopped as AJ hugged her, which she felt as well.
“Could Kara come up as well?” AJ asked.
Rusty pulled back from the hug and looked up at Quen'thira. “Could Kara come up as well?”
Quen'thira sighed. “One would rather not bring too many individuals up the One's ship.” She tapped her chin in thought. “However, family should not be separated. AJ and Kara can come up. No more.”
Rusty looked at AJ. “Did you hear that?”
AJ nodded and smiled. “Can we come up now? That is, after we goodbye to the others.”
“AJ and Kara may come up.” Quen'thira said. “Retrieve Kara, and go outside. One will beam her and AJ up to One's ship.”
“Okay.” AJ nodded. “See you soon, Sweets.”
Her hologram disappeared. Rusty giggled happily and hugged Quen'thira around her legs. “Thank you, Quen'thira.”
The alien placed her hands on top of Rusty's head. Her species never showed affection by wrapping their arms around one another. That being said, Rusty had hugged her several times during her week aboard her ship, and she was getting used to it.
“One is happy to make Rusty happy.” She waited for Rusty to let her go, and together, they walked out of the bridge, and into the hall.
They made their way to a new room that Rusty had never been to. The room was crescent shaped, and it had a small oval console suspended on a thin spindly stand near the door. Quen'thira walked up the small console and pressed a combination of buttons.
In a sudden flash of light, AJ and Kara, holding hands, were standing in the room, both looking disoriented.
“AJ! Kara!” Rusty shouted as she ran over to them and hugged them both.
Kara and AJ returned the hug and AJ kissed Rusty deeply.
“Mama!” Kara cried happily. “I'm so glad you're okay.”
Rusty broke the kiss from AJ.
“I'm a lot better now that you guys are here.” Rusty wiped her tears. “Oh.” She gestured to Quen'thira. “This is Quen'thira. Quen'thira? This is AJ and Kara.”
AJ and Kara looked up at Quen'thira as the alien walked over to the family. “One is pleased to meet you.” She studied Kara and then AJ for a few moments. “One does have a query.”
Rusty looked up at her. “About?”
“Rusty is a cat and otter.” Quen'thira said simply. “Kara, from what One could tell, is part cat. AJ is a human female. How did Rusty and AJ have Kara?”
Rusty blushed. “Kara was cloned from My cat DNA and AJ's DNA.” She admitted. “Neither of us gave birth to her.”
“One understands.” Quen'thira nodded. “Welcome to One's ship. Let One show you to your sleeping pods.”
The tall alien led the three females out of the teleportation room and to the room with Rusty's sleeping pod. She gestured to the two new pods next to hers. “When AJ and Kara are not awake, they will sleep in these pods.”
Kara looked at the pods. “We're gonna sleep in pods?”
“Affirmative.” Quen'thira answered. “They are very efficient. After every sleep cycle she will wake up well rested.”
“Yer ship, yer rules.” AJ said. “Kara. Listen to the nice, uh... lady.”
Kara nodded. “Yes, Mom.”
“It is time for the rest cycle to begin.” Quen'thira said. “Please enter your pods.”
Kara nodded and climbed into the upright pod. The doors closed automatically, and the kitten fell right to sleep.
Quen'thira looked at Rusty and AJ. “AJ. One has a query for her.”
“Go ahead.” AJ smiled.
“Rusty has been enhanced with interface plugs. One also improved her DNA with One's DNA. However, she was already enhanced with FEV and her own DNA.” Quen'thira said simply. “Would AJ allow one to enhance AJ with interface plugs and other DNA?”
Rusty gasped. “What kind of DNA?”
“Do I get a choice?” AJ asked. She thought in silence for a moment. “I always wanted to be a bit stronger... how about... a horse? Part horse? part human?”
Quen'thira thought for a moment, and then nodded. “One could combine horse DNA and her DNA. AJ's reflexes, strength and senses would be enhanced.” She 'smiled and continued, “Other enhancements could be made as well. One could give AJ means for Rusty and AJ to have more children if they wish.”
“Like, biologically?” Rusty blushed. “How?”
“One could give AJ both genitalia-”
“Okay. Yeah. You could make me have... male and femaleparts. I get it.” AJ cut her off. She looked down at Rusty. “Gotta admit, Sweets. It sounds awfully tempting. Being part horse and all.”
Rusty blushed more. “I'll love you no matter what you look like. So, really, it's up to you.”
AJ looked up at Quen'thira. “Just the animal DNA, and other enhancement, right? No alien DNA or FEV?”
“Affirmative.” The alien nodded. One can perform the operation... after the rest cycle and morning meal.”
AJ blushed. “Okay. Sure.” She held out her hand. Quen'thira took it and shook it twice. “See ya tomorrow.”
Rusty kissed AJ goodnight and climbed into her pod. The doors closed with a hiss.
“One more thing, Quen'thira.” AJ said. “Could ya make mah fur orange on mah body, and keep mah hair blonde? Like it is now?” She blushed more.
The alien nodded. “One is able to make those changes. Rest now, AJ. She has a big day tomorrow.”
AJ smiled and climbed into her pod. As soon as the doors closed, she was out.
….
Vix woke up the next morning and untangled herself from Silver. She stood up and stretched, yawning as she did so. She got dressed and walked out of their bed room, and into the living room. She made some coffee, poured herself a cup, and walked outside to start working on their car. Ronto was another 260 km from King, and they didn't feel like walking the rest of the way.
Vix blinked in shock and surprise as she saw their caravan sitting next to their car.
“What the heck?” The tall Mechanic gasped. “How the heck did that... get here?”
She walked up to it, and carefully opened the door. She looked inside and saw all their supplies, and a whole lot of weapons, which she guessed, were the weapons from the defeated Super mutant army.
She looked at the ground, and noticed large foot prints next to the caravan, which in turn, lead to De Writer's house.
Curiously, Vix walked over to the Old Man's house and knocked on the door. She knew he was an early riser, and wasn't waking him up.
De Writer opened the door and smiled at his neighbor. “Good morning, Vix. How may I help you?”
“Uh, yeah.” She pointed over her shoulder. “Our caravan mysteriously showed up last night, and, um, there's large foot prints next to it... leading to your house.”
De Writer nodded. “A kind stranger pulled your caravan from your house to here as repayment. I met them and offered her sanctuary before they continued on their journey.” He tilted his head. “Trust me when I tell you that they mean no harm. They're very shy and don't want to be seen by anyone right now.”
Vix nodded in understanding. “I trust you, Old Man.” She smiled. “If your friend wants to ever say hi, or make some new friends, they don't have to be scared of us.”
“R-really?” A gruff female voice said suddenly from inside the house.
De Writer stepped aside as the door opened a little wider. All 7 feet of Minty appeared in the door way.
Vix gasped. “Holy... you're a... uh, wow...”
Minty looked worried. “My name is Minty. I'm not a monster. I'm a half death-claw. I was changed by force-”
“Don't worry, Minty.” Vix cleared her throat. “Just took me by surprised, is all. My family is a mixed bag of the odd and unusual.”
“You're not afraid of me?” Minty ask as she rubbed her right arm nervously.
“I've met ghouls, half-ghouls, friendly super-mutants, and all kind of other mutants, and a ghoul with a tree growing out of his head.” Vix shrugged. “So, yeah, you're different, but, I don't scare easily.”
Minty smiled. “Okay. Thanks, Vix.” She held out her paw. “Nice to meet you.”
Vix shook her hand. “Likewise, Minty. I owe you for bringing our caravan and supplies back to us. So, if you ever want to come to our place for dinner, feel free. Okay?”
Minty blushed. “You... you don't owe me for that. Um, see, I was the reason why those mutants attacked. I escaped from the base, and they chased after me. I'm sorry-”
“Oh, well... no one can blame you for that. You escaped and thought you could hide. You had no idea that they would send an army after you.” Vix said simply. “So, my dinner offer still stands.”
Minty smiled. “Thank you, Vix.”
Vix giggled. “Well, a good day to both of you. I have some weapons to sell.” She dipped her head to both Minty and De writer and walked back to the Caravan.
