Hey, coming back with a new species, this time a macro one for the fun of it. Introducing the Maevri lore dump
Biology
The Maevri are a species of very large serpentine reptilians, being 17.5 meters long and able to stand over 5 meters tall if adapted to normal gravity levels. Despite their immense size they remain proportionally similar to other serpentine species as they are normally not held back by gravity which would squish their proportions. They have flared scales on parts of their body such as the neck and shoulders, but the majority are on a large lure on their tail to appear like some form of large prey animal to the similarly sized fauna in their environment. To kill their prey they use a highly concentrated cytotoxic venom which is produced in large venom glands inside the forward body and injected via a pair of long folding fangs in the mouth.
The Maevri are an all female species which reproduce in the same manner as the Polela due to standardisation by their creators, though they do not lay eggs nor have the in-built ability to nurse their young. After a long gestation period they give birth to up to 5 pups which are proportionally similar to that of a Human teenager which continually grow during their lifespan, though the process slows around the 17.5m length mark.
Some groups of Maevri encountered a plantlike organism in a part of their native dyson tree forest which was symbiotic in nature, which the Maevri dubbed as (---), and ended up as hosts due to coming into contact with a sap-like fluid it produced. In exchange for being a host for the plant to be able to spread and obtain some necessary nutrients an individual gains the ability to photosynthesise thanks to leaf growth on the forward body and bark like armour plating to protect from injury. The infection process was initially understood after a few individuals on an exploratory expedition accidentally came into contact with floating droplets of a sap-like fluid and started developing bark-like growths. Concerned about their apparent illness the affected individuals were kept separate to observe what was happening with their condition eventually reaching the stage of leaf growth from the body, followed by the eruption of purple flowers. Thankfully it seemed like the victims were not in pain and actually seemed rather happy, though didn’t seem to be otherwise acting out of character or trying to infect others, instead actively keeping their distance. A notable thing however was that they seemed to not be feeling as hungry as often, so perhaps the plant growth was somehow sustaining them to a degree, and they only appeared to release the sap when poked in the bark with sharp implements. Sometimes the flowers would produce puffs of particles, perhaps to interact with the same flowers on other individuals, however no adverse effects seemed to come from the process. In the end it seemed like their infections weren’t dangerous, and when some of the individuals later reproduced it was not transferred to their offspring, and some other individuals willingly were infected with carefully released sap at later points to study the process further. Besides cases of accidental infection due to individuals being injured the symbiotic plant became a common sight among some populations via intentional transferral of the sap. When the technological capability to investigate the organism on a biological level came around it was found that the sap contained spores from the plant which multiplied in a host to create the growths and the flowers indeed were used for the different plants on different hosts to swap genetic material. The plant also did borrow nutrients from the host but generated sugars from water in the host’s body, and light and carbon dioxide in the environment, so indeed did help give the host sustenance as seemed to be the case from the start. It also produced small amounts of hormones that helped keep the host’s mood up resulting in depression medications being derived from the plant’s secretions into the host, helping those uninfected with mental health issues. Finally it was found that the host’s immune system did seem to try to fight the infection, though potentially less than in the past due to the plant’s adaptations over time, resulting in a slightly higher body temperature in infected individuals.
History
A number of years before the Estab disappeared in 30000BC, a group of Estav became briefly stranded in a system thanks to malfunctions with their ship that if not remedied could have left them stuck in interstellar space, arriving to a system which was still relatively young with a mostly depleted protoplanetary disk as well as several gas giants with their own ring debris fields and moons forming within their gravitational pools. The abundance of resources as well was seen as a boon, and sped up their ability to fix their engines. Seeing the potential of the system however the group marked it as a location for future experimentation and settlement before leaving for their intended destination. When they arrived they started deploying a sort of habitat building bioengineered organism on the surface of one of the uninhabitable worlds in the system as part of a full scale test of the technology, though during the observation period one of the project members had somewhat of an inspiration when thinking back on the system they stopped off in and posited the question “what if we used a derivation of the organism to make a forest of space habitats.” The idea was taken seriously enough that a research station was deployed back in the young system in order to refine the terraforming organism to function reliably in space, and the Estav crews began to cultivate a forest in the moon-forming disk of one of the system’s gas giants. As time went on the project expanded somewhat with fauna and other flora being designed to bulk up an internal ecosystem, and in its final stages an intelligent species was being designed to populate the forest. Unfortunately, when the species, the Maevri, were in the final refining and production stage, the Estav disappeared, leaving the station unmanned and only administrated by its onboard AI which had also been undergoing some modifications to help it help the Maevri once the station was docked to the forest and they were released. While its creators were gone it did continue production of the species, putting individuals in storage for later release, and it wasn’t until the station ended up inadvertently integrated into the forest it released them as the time was “somewhat right” and it had more or less been integrated as intended in the end. The onboard AI was able to give the Maevri some basic advice though due to not having all the required resources uploaded to it before the disappearance of its creators it didn’t have the knowledge to effectively fully uplift them, the Maevri instead ended up following a slightly more natural technological development path, for their unique circumstances anyways.
Eventually the Maevri reached the technological capability to explore other locations within the forest that they couldn't directly access previously, such as a moon that had been caught up in the forest. Their first spacecraft were taking very young trees that were budding off of the main structure and attaching rockets and flight control systems, allowing them to reach the moon as well as other locations in their star system and over the course of the next several decades established colonies within their gas giant’s orbit near other moons and proto moons.
By 2256, the Maevri were discovered by the Pelvfastero Collective, who had stumbled across the system during a survey of systems near the edge of their territory. Upon entering the system they very quickly noticed the large forest sitting in the orbit of a gas giant. Upon investigating the forest they quickly discovered that there were also spacecraft moving around the structure and throughout the moon system of the gas giant to similar structures. Seeing that there was intelligent life, albeit seemingly non-threatening as they seemed to be flying around in literal plants, the group of ships moved to make contact with whoever lived in the system. At the same time the Maevri made moves to intercept the new arrivals to find out who they were out of curiosity, and after several weeks of translating work the Collective ships were able to properly announce who they were. They stated that they were conducting a survey of systems within their territory and had outlined that the system was within it and thus warranted a survey. Seeing that this Pelvfastero Collective was clearly more technologically advanced than them, Maevri cautiously asked what their intentions were as the Collective had not anticipated finding them, to which the Collective ships stated they did not have any ill intentions for them and asked if they could inspect the unusual structure they lived in as they had not seen anything like it before, however the Maevri were somewhat cautious and initially denied their request. The Collective however was quick to make an offer to give them some of their technology which intrigued the Maevri who agreed to a limited tour of a part of the forest under supervision. After having one of the Collective’s ships dock to a station, with some difficulty thanks to incompatible airlocks resulting in the transfer having to happen with the Collective having to send its people out in space suits and cycle through an airlock which seemed quite unnecessarily oversized. While the airlock cycled they speculated a little before the inner door cracked open and they one of them nearly fainted at the sight of an individual that was incredibly large, larger than any of the largest Garthelca. Following the initial encounter and being slapped back to their senses the tour was started and while deep in the forest Collective envoys discovered that part of the forest had what looked like an Estav space station wrapped up in its tendrils, however upon asking about the structure and if they could enter it, they were denied stating it acted as an important religious site for many of their kind. At least the presence of the station somewhat explained the forest as it was effectively impossible that a spaceborne forest populated by giant snakes could have come into existence naturally, let alone in a system this young.
In the years following the encounter the Pelvfastero Collective worked to integrate the Maevri under their wings, tempting them with various technologies. By 2261 the Maevri ultimately agreed to become a part of the Pelvfastero Collective and ultimately allowed the Collective to set foot into the Estav station. Upon entering the station however the Collective was met with disappointment as most of the station was heavily stripped of its systems, leaving only a damaged and patched together reactor and a corrupted AI which proved incapable of providing any real assistance beyond simple civilization building and some moral teachings. Over the next few years the Collective delivered the technology that they had promised to the Maevri in order to allow them to move around the rest of the Collective like any other species, however it resulted in the Maevri having to make new ships as their previous ones were not rated for FTL travel.
Not long after being taken into the Collective however war started with the [Grelkatan] Transplanetary Union and like everyone else in the Collective were told that the [G]TU had attacked them in an unprovoked attack, using carefully edited combat footage as evidence. Not long after several other groups had now entered the war on the Grelkata’s side resulting in the Maevri being tasked with increasing output of raw materials to help fuel their side of the war which they happily obliged to but in 2290 however their system came under attack by a combined SSA and Urvalet fleet which eliminated a Collective fleet that was protecting the system. Despite taking the system the Urvalet and SSA did not enter the Dyson Tree forest thanks to a robust defensive system around it still being present, and after some investigation with a stealth ship found that it would theoretically be impossible to safely enter without causing severe damage. Following the war's end in 2291 however the Maevri still refused to stand down and were being monitored by the SSA and Urvalet for several years after the war but eventually it was determined that the Maevri were not realistically a threat on their own, allowing them to move around as they pleased. The Maevri however decided to go to a now former trade partner of the Collective, the Kipheijh for support.
