TO INFINITY AND BEYOND! The original "Toy Story" β the first fully computed animated motion picture, and the film that put Pixar Animation Studios on the map is 30 years old this month (released on November 22, 1995).
I was 9 years old when I first saw it in theaters (at the now-demolished Metro North Mall in Kansas City) β the perfect age to appreciate this colorful three-dimensional world on the giant screen. Everything about it is top-notch β the animation, the characters, the story, and the musical score by Randy Newman. The film has such an innocent, yet clever view of the world through a toy's point of view. And I especially love the casting of Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Don Rickles, Jim Varney, Wallace Shawn, Annie Potts, and future Pixar regular John Ratzenberger.
My love for the world, the characters, and the story was instant. For Christmas that year, I asked for the miniature toys and puppets that came with the Burger King meals. When it came out on VHS, I watched that tape dozens of times and could practically quote it backwards and forward. In many ways, I sort of became Andy from the movie. As I got older, I eventually collected the bigger (more movie accurate) toys of Woody, Buzz, Slinky, Potato Head, etc (as you can see here).
And of course, I love the sequels β "Toy Story 2" (saw when I was 13), and "Toy Story 3" (saw when I was 24). "Toy Story 4" was okay, but not as good as the others. And there's a fifth movie coming next summer. Hopefully it will be worth it.
All I can say is that I'm glad "Toy Story" was the first CGI animated movie, and I'm glad it became such a staple of my youth. Here's to 30 Years...and beyond!
