Mahaan is the son of a pair of lions that arrived in Africa after being taken from their old home in a faraway land, and then escaped their floating prison after it got caught in a bad storm. They and the other animals that escaped managed to swim to shore and then dispersed, with Mahaan being born a couple weeks after their arrival in this strange new land. Mahaan barely remembers his parents as they sadly both died shortly after he was weaned, his mother succumbing to an illness and his father being killed by a prey animal, leaving the young cub to be raised by his aunt Shahana.
Shahana and little Mahaan eventually come across the Night Pride, a family of lions that made their home around a magnificent tree, who are more than willing to take them in. After their arrival, Shahana introduces them to the language and culture of her former home, while she and Mahaan in turn learn the ways of their new pride. Mahaan grows up into a very wise and harmonious lion, always kind to others and willing to help if needed. The pride's rulers Adhumita and Kujali take notice of this as he is growing up and, in a move that surprises everyone in the pride, declare that Mahaan will be their heir instead of their eldest child Kingo, and that he will marry their daughter Sarani. This doesn't sit well with the bitter Kingo, and he forever holds a grudge towards his parents and Mahaan.
Mahaan and Sarani are later wed and go on to have a litter of three cubs. They have a happy life together until Sarani sadly dies one day, having been killed by what appeared to be a rogue. Mahaan believed it to be an accident, as while rogue attacks were rare in the Night Pride's territory, it was something that happened from time to time, and Mahaan didn't suspect it as being part of a plan. He tries to go on with his life and raise his three cubs with help from the pride, but during one of his patrols one day, tragedy strikes again. His young cubs had decided to accompany him, and while Mahaan is out sunning himself while watching them play, he is suddenly attacked from behind by what appeared to be a rogue. He fights back while his cubs flee, but Mahaan is no match for the attacker and is soon killed.
Mahaan’s cubs disappear right after his death, and his brother-in-law Kingo is left to inherit the Night Pride’s throne. The pride is thrown into chaos following his ascension, but years later, a now adult Sinh returns to the kingdom to set things right.
Mahaan is the unnamed king who gets shot by humans in the first episode of Simba The King Lion. Since knockoff Mufasa here is meant to be a full-blooded Asiatic lion, I tried to give him a less full mane than the one he had in the show..
Also, this is probably a good time to explain my headcanon for why we see non-African animals living in Africa in Season 3 of The Lion Guard. They're descendants of animals that wound up in Africa after escaping a sinking cargo ship that was transporting them elsewhere. Mahaan, his parents and his aunt are purebred Asiatic lions, while their descendants (Rani and her family) are mixed breeds.
