Chapter 2: Round Two
Apparently round two wasn’t for a day so Esbu and the other slave fighters had some time to recover in the ‘lounge’ if it could be called that. And that’s where Esbu spent the time, mostly laying on a couch. He was sore all over from the fight, he had gotten hit pretty good a couple times and barely even registered the ratty couch he had flopped down in to recover. He barely even cared at this point that he was still naked in a room full of others.
At the very least he wasn’t in immediate fear of someone messing with him while resting. They were mostly in the same boat as him and for the most part saw him as one of the more intimidating of them due to his size and race. Others weren’t so lucky, particularly the females of the group. For obvious reasons most of the knock-outs from round one were of the fairer sex, though some made it through. About 6 of the 20 remaining were female, from an initial roughly 50-50 mix meant that those remaining either were very good or very lucky.
Alethea obviously was one that made it., and her friend Lapis had gotten through based on Alethea’s fighting ability coupled with some help from Esbu, but Lapis was not a fighter. The poor chubby dragon-like female was trying her best to fold into the walls to avoid others looking at her, and maybe getting ideas about taking liberties with her in the night. At least she had Alethea watching out for her.
Speaking of Alethea.
“Yo. Cheesehead.”
Esbu groaned moving his sore muscles as he turned to face the petite snow leopard with the shiny arms, “Hey. There.” He said trying not to let his eyes trace too far south, and probably failing. Not that Alethea was bothering to cover herself.
“I just wanted to thank you for the assist out there. There were a few too many for just me.”
“Feral little thing like you?” Esbu asked, “You looked like you were handling yourself.”
Alethea let out a ‘humph’ noise that could have equally been agreement or annoyance, “MySELF maybe, but me AND Lapis here….” She trailed off nodding to her larger friend trying to look smaller than she was behind her, “Not as much.”
Esbu looked over the pleasantly plump blue mammalian dragoness, “How are you holding up?”
“S-scared… I… I don’t… want to be a slave.”
“Well I’m sure you’re friend will help you out, and you don’t have to worry about me either.” He said.
“T-thank you s-sir….”
“That said…” Esbu said with a sigh, “You may want… to look at the VIP boxes… see of any of the would be buyers look… you know… less harsh.”
Lapis squeaked nervously at the implication.
“Lapis, you just relax” Alethea said, giving Esbu a look, “go wait for me by that side table I’ll bring a snack after having a talk with cheese boy here.”
Lapis reluctantly stepped away from her friend and Alethea turned to Esbu, “Listen you…”
“Esbu…”
“What?”
“My name.”
“Fine. I’m Alethea, that’s Lapis, and I don’t need YOU scaring her even more. That’s not helpful.”
Esbu sat up creaking as he stretched his muscles, “Maybe its scarry but unhelpful? Alethea you’re a good fighter but you and she should be realistic too.”
“I’m not giving up on my friend.”
“I didn’t say that.. but if she does lose, and… she very well might… trying to focus on enticing a … better than average owner… might be worth considering.”
Alethea growled and looked away, “Fuck….”
“ya…” Esbu agreed, “You know they’ll likely split us up randomly again. She’ll be on her own till you get to her.”
“Even if she is… I just have to win… There’s prize money in addition to the ‘prizes’ they showed off. I’ll just buy her myself if I have to.”
“The prize money enough for that? And to then have a place to live?”
“If we splits?”
Esbu blinked, “Ok… we just met and now you suddenly want to both assume we’ll both win and ask me to help you buy your friend if she loses?”
“Either that or I’ll auction of my winnings and use THAT money to buy her!”
Esbu sighed again, “You’d be ok there? Selling someone else off to the highest bidder?”
Alethea didn’t answer, and Esbu didn’t push more. That was something that Alethea didn’t want to admit, that they’d likely both have to be less than nice in some ways, but then again there would be perks. Those female sergals up for the prize pool were lovely. If he did win… would it be so bad to … enjoy himself? He certainly wouldn’t hurt them.
All too soon it was time for the next round. The combatants were split up and spread around the area to be let in at different points this time. From esbu’s perspective that wasn’t too different from how things were at the start, but the same wouldn’t be true for Lapis.
Should he focus on himself of try to find her to help her through this round too? Alethea would look for her of course, but would she find her in time?
“Fuck it…” He said as the doors opened, and he took off into the arena.
The Arena itself had changed a bit since he was last here. The fake city scape was smaller and with different buildings. He hadn’t checked their composition to much the first time around, but they much be made of something cheap and easily fabable if their captors had redone the course in less than a day. This one seemed to be focused more on tight corners and alleys in a smaller overall space to go with the lower number of competitors.
That also meant that finding his new friends wasn’t going to be easy to do, at least not quickly.
The safe thing to do would be to creep slowly through the tight turns and stay behind over as much as possible while locating his ideal weapon and letting competitors take eachother out while he picked them off till half were gone. If he did that though ther’s little chance he’d find who he wanted before she got taken out so he found himself moving far faster and less carefully than he otherwise would.
And that let the tiger get the jump on him.
Esbu grunted in pain as someone came from around a blind corner and into his back trying to tackle him forward. He staggered and slammed into the wall of the alley they were in, the not-stone collapsing a little under the impact.
With a grunt of effort he forced himself up and started grappling with the tiger, this wasn’t’ going to be super easy. Of course, while the female slaves lost quickly the remaining males were powerhouses compared to the starting spread.
Esbu was still dealing with the tiger when he heard a familiar cry echoing over the fake buildings of the area. That sounded like Lapis. He had to get away, but he was still mid fight with the tiger, or would be if the tiger was paying any attention to him anymore. He blinked in surprise as he realized there was a tan furred hand around the tiger’s throat.
A hand that was coming out of the wall itself.
To say Esbu didn’t see that one coming was putting it mildly, Sure the damage to the wall from colliding with it proved it wasn’t’ real stone, and likely far weaker, but someone had punched a fist clear through it and was now throttling the tiger with one hand, which meant…
“SHIT!!” Esbu shouted and jumped back as a second fist came through barely missing his face and joining the other around the struggling Tiger’s throat before pulling him through the wall. The remaining fighters were definitely a cut above the rest if THAT was what he had to worry about. But he could focus on that later, for now though he had somewhere to be. He turned to run in the direction that he had just heard Lapis call out from.
When the buzzer announced the end of the round.
