This color rendering makes it more ominous and a creature to fear. The silver rings in the ear are just perfect somehow. The only part that is, for lack of a better word, confusing is the tongue. It is more detailed in the first version and in this one, looks a bit odd.
But please remember I am by no means a visual artist so perhaps my p.o.v. is off.

Hmhm now that’s one adorable dog. Maybe if you fed him enough fresh meat you could get him to let you scratch him behind the ears and rap that tongue of his around your hand.
I really like the darker coloration, and the blood on the claws also adds a nice effect. Very nice picture.
