The Black Cauldron (1985)
Directed by: Richard Rich, Ted Berman
Animators : Phil Nibbelink ,Steve E. Gordon, Randy Cartwright etc.
Voices: John Hurt (Horned King),
Phil Fondacaro (Creeper)
Narrator: "Legend has it, in the mystic land of Prydain, there was once a king so cruel and so evil, that even the Gods feared him. Since no prison could hold him, he was thrown alive into a crucible of molten iron. There his demonic spirit was captured in the form of a great, Black Cauldron. For uncounted centuries, the Black Cauldron lay hidden, waiting, while evil men searched for it, knowing whoever possessed it would have the power to resurrect an army of deathless warriors... and with them, rule the world..."
Another Disney Movie that is getting more and more love these days is "The Black Cauldron" By no means a perfect film but you can tell, that the artist put a lot of heart and sould into this project, that sadly was not a huge Box Office hit. I love the atmosphere of the movie but as someone who has read the Book and love it, I still wish we would have gotten a more faithful adaptation. Still, the legendary John Hurt as the voice of this truly creepy Villain is just perfect casting. And damn, that scene near the end, when the Horned King gets sucked into the cauldron - pure nightmare fuel .

I was obsessed with this movie as a kid, rewatched it when it came out on VHS and hated it, and rewatched it again as an adult a few years back. The movie's a total mess -- there's a bunch of stuff that can just be cut and not affect a thing in the film -- but those character designs of The Horned King and Gurgi are top notch, and the animation's real nice.
I guess for me the movie is kind of a guilty pleasure. Oh, the movie is quite a mess - you can tell that the creators tried to fit the stories of 5 books in one movie and the end result is very uneven. I am also not the biggest fan of the main Character. But as you said, the designs of the Horned King, Gurgi and Creeper are just top notch.
