Delayed, but I couldn’t wait to celebrate the 30th anniversary of “Little Bear”! This charming Nelvana adaptation of Else Holmelund Minarik and Maurice Sendak’s beloved books is one of my all-time favorite childhood cartoons. It’s a gentle slice-of-life series chronicling the everyday adventures of curious grizzly cub Little Bear, his Mother Bear, Father Bear, and friends in their cozy forest home. My journey with Little Bear began at age four or five, captivated by Treehouse TV commercials and the VHS tapes my family rented (some of which I still own). From those early days, Little Bear has remained a constant favourite, standing out as one of – if not the – most beloved characters of my life.
Beyond its endearing storytelling and witty humour—characterized by quirky dialogue and lighthearted slapstick—“Little Bear” truly shines through the depth of its titular character. Little Bear isn’t just a star; he’s a remarkably nuanced creation. His journeys, marked by relatable missteps and subsequent comebacks, foster a strong audience connection, inspiring us to emulate his perseverance and learn alongside him. Little Bear embodies a charming blend of sweetness, kindness, creativity, and bravery. His character truly comes alive, however, thanks to the exceptional voice work of Canadian actress Kristin Fairlie. Her performance not only captures Little Bear’s boundless enthusiasm, curiosity, and endearing emotional insecurities but also elevates them. In fact, Fairlie’s vocal portrayal rivals the iconic performance of Jonathan Taylor Thomas as Young Simba in Disney’s “The Lion King” (1994), proving Little Bear is far more than just a cuddly figure; he’s a deeply felt presence.
Thirty years later, “Little Bear” continues to hold a truly special place in my heart. Thank you, Nelvana, Else Holmelund Minarik, Maurice Sendak, Kristin Fairlie, and the entire team, for crafting a show that has brought so much joy, comfort, and quiet magic into so many lives. Happy 30th Anniversary to a beloved classic!
