FINALLY!
After seven carriage rides, thirteen train stops, and a half-hour walk, we’ve finally made it back to Akitoro!
Akitoro is a lively rural village nestled deep within the forest.
It is home to around 808 tanukis, with just over 200 residents of other species living among them.
It’s small, warm, and filled with the scent of autumn leaves and hearth smoke.
There's always a celebration here in Akitoro.
I was born here in the River Belle, the great river that connects the entire continent,
under the Tanukiri Clan, a name that stretches back countless centuries through pom-poko wars and chuki-chuki festivities.
My granny was overjoyed to see us! We rarely get the chance to come home.
Only during holidays or on official business so this visit feels especially precious.
In a few days, it will be Tanuki Day!
My grandma is the Shirotanuki of the century...
every hundred years, a new white tanuki is born with our god’s blessing,
symbolizing purity and divine favor.
She’s seventy-five now and already searching for the next heir to carry the Tanukiri name.
I suppose that’s why she’s always extra sweet to her tanuki granddaughters…
perhaps hoping one of us will one day give birth to the next Shirotanuki.
