This illustration has a little bit of a story.
One day, I was minding my good ole business when my friend
AzeVix-Wolfress came to me on telegram and said:
"Ay, Ink? Do you know how to draw fat people?"
And I said:
"Yeah? I think?"
And she said:
"So, I have a client who requested an illustration I can't for the love of God get it right. I am just embarrassing myself, so... can I pass you the briefing and you pick it if you can do it?"
And I said:
"Well, sure, lay it on me"
And the briefing was a three pose reference sheet of a fat cow, like a "mom" style cow. And I was like "sure, fat. I can do fat", and then I talked to the client and he said "very fat". I did some sketches, and he said "bigger". I corrected, and he said "bigger". So I put my pen on the table and started looking for MEDICAL. PICTURES. Like, reference, textbook pictures of morbidly obese people. And he said "that's it. That's how big I want her to be". So, I did what I do when I have no idea of what to do: observed, traced, cried, screamed, and delivered this piece with the approval of the client.
I have never seen so much skin and fat folds in my life, which made me think a LOT on how fatphobic my art used to be. All my past drawings were between strong/athletic and super skinny bodies. My references, the art I consumed and the art I created... There weren't a lot of fat characters. Made me think about diversity of bodies as well. And thank the Art Gods more people are creating body diversity art, such as
niochem who makes the most beautiful fat body illustrations I have ever seen. Her females are gorgeous and they look soft, and beautiful, and charming, and kind... I love her art. I just love it.
[Am I using this post as an excuse to gush about another artist's artwork? Yes.
