Born 38 days prior to Rin Elyran, Zarana is the third anthropomorphic daughter of Edgar Wolfe and Ninetales Vastina, the Mother of Planet Vasti. She is the third niece of Lady Helena, the Mother of Planet Halen, and her uncles are Evin and Zoro "Zo" Wolfe. Her sisters are wolfsune twins Alisha and Boshi, who are older by a little more than 3 years. Zarana's fighting style can be compared to that of Private First Class Jenette Vasquez, portrayed by Jenette Goldstein in the 1986 film Aliens, while in her everyday life, she is very outgoing. Zarana has known Rin since 1985, and Elly since they were both young children, subsequently becoming Elly's best friend; while Alisha and Boshi take a more lighthearted, fun-loving approach to their love lives with Rin, Elly and Zarana both have a very intimate relationship with Rin. Zarana identifies as pansexual.

Zarana aided Rin in the final battle against Marcellus Simonson, a battle that left Rin very exhausted, though Zarana never left Rin's side while he rested. On February 14, 2010, Rin married Zarana, Elly, Alisha, and Boshi, and although Zarana's married name is now Elyran, she still prefers to go by only her first name.

Zarana loves to wear luxurious fur stoles and all sorts of different Japanese attire, including the loose-fitting, highly-comfortable dark red outfit seen here. Other interests include playing violin, building computers, servicing and programming vintage analog drum machines, spending time with Michael and Mary (adopted in 1998 by Rin and the girls), and sitting among wild foxes in the forest.
