When bicorns are born, there is a thin layer of velvety skin that covers the bones that will make up the centers of their horns as they grow. At about 1 week later, the skin will be peeled back, usually via the mother's intervention or the foal being a bit too adventurous.
This only hurts a little and is no cause for concern as it must happen to all bicorn foals eventually.
