Ryukishi's character has never been depicted with out his mask, so he thought it would be interesting to have a traditional commission done of the character unmasked for the first time ever. It was interesting figuring out the finer details of the face, and I was personally surprised he want the character to not have a lot of notable markings or scars. But I really like it how it came out. Let me know what you all think.

I love how this picture turned out! You uncannily captured many aspects of Ryu's character without having any knowledge of his backstory. Amazing!
Ryu's mask wasn't originally intended to simply conceal his identity or hide a scarred face, but to serve as protection against the very power he wields. To depose a tyrant that held his entire race enslaved, he learned a forbidden martial art rooted in the powers of chaos and destruction. While granting him superhuman abilities, these "shadow arts" can ultimately dissolve the user's sanity, and, in some cases, their corporeal being. The tendrils licking at the edges of the frame during Ryu's moment of vulnerability exemplify this. Ritualistically, the mask signifies an "abandoning of oneself" to fully embrace the art, yet it also carries powerful enchantments that allow the wearer to stave off its entropic side-effects.
This picture says it all: the ritual, the mystery, Ryu's feelings toward his situation, and the reality he spends each day in. Branded a murderer and a scourge by the survivors of the tyrant's noble house, he wanders the world as a mercenary, forever on the run from his reputation and the dark energies that constantly try to consume him. Ryu has served as a bodyguard and advisor to kings, and worked as a janitor shoveling shit for table scraps. All this in the persuit of stability, closure, and a resting place worthy of his skill.
