Sharkdogs are draconic canines bred from coursing hounds and threshers, shark-like wyverns. They are loyal and fierce, are able to run on air as surely as over land, and have both keen eyesight and sense of smell. The Skyguard breed them for use in the service, supporting their handlers in tracking and driving off dangerous monsters, bandits, and sky-pirates. These animals have a serious disposition and make poor companions for all but dedicated handlers, remaining with the person they have bonded with for their entire life. In the event of the death of their handler, the sharkdog may accept another handler that was familiar to them - their owner's child or spouse, or sometimes a close colleague - but more often they retire in the Skyguard's barracks, pining for their lost master.

Caring for these "widow-hounds" is a task reserved for the Skyguard's apprentice handlers, so they come to respect the bond they and their own hound may one day forge. However, it is also done in the hopes that one of these sharkdogs may bond with an apprentice and get a new lease on life - thanks to their draconic heritage, sharkdogs can live for 50 years or more, and having one sidelined early in its career by loss is a blow to the Skyguard.
