I think this is a great inversion of the trope involving Fat Kings.
Usually their great size is indicative of selfishness and how they indulge themselves whilst letting others suffer.
This guy only got this big cus his selfless deeds and improvements to the kingdom made everyone just that eager to fatten him up this much :p

Yeah, i guess it is kind of a twist on that. Don't get me wrong, i enjoy the whole selfish king tyrant trope myself, but i like the idea of "king whose figure is as prosperous as the land he rules over" just as much. Plus, it's just fun to think about how his ever-increasing size is handled by those around him.
I'll admit, seeing him fatten up to as huge as he got almost made me surprised there wasn't some kind of magic blessing involved, aside from pulling Excalibur from the stone at the beginning. And that with how big he got that the kingdom itself didn't follow him into obesity... though admittedly that's just my love for 'contagious' weight gain as a trope speaking.
