On my last trip to Canada I boxed up a load of fur to bring down to the USA with me as a 2nd bag on the flight.
During out layover in Denver, a thunderstorm rolled through and it rained - delaying our flight by 2 hours. Bags were abandoned where they lay until it was safe for the workers to go back to their posts sans lightning.
The suitcases arrived at our final destination moist but happy. The cardboard box of fur, however, was, at that point, largely held together by hope, wishes, and parcel tape. Nothing was lost, but just a little more beating and time and I suspect it would have finally just exploded all its contents over the world.
So, when transporting boxes through the air, just remember to always bag it up :p

just because its slim doesnt mean it cant happen. i mean its such a shame that a company looks out for their employees safety first, its not often someone survives after getting struck.
honestly if something had been damaged the passenger could talk to them about it and see if there is some kind of reinbursment that could happen -shrugs-

One last time! No you're right. Not the employees fault. The airport should supply them. And getting a little annoyed because I had already asked if perhaps they did not have roofs or tarps at other airport I haven't been to. A simple 'no they don't always have these' would've sufficed.
How could they leave your shit in the rain...??? Maybe it's different airport per airport but last I checked, the baggage cars your luggage is delivered to the planes on and vise versa HAS GOT A FUCKING ROOF! There's just no excuse if the baggage cars are the same as they are here. Not to mention most suitcases aren't waterproof anyways. Now I fear for my arts... it doesn't fit in my carry on. :S
I'm not sure about the baggage carts but luggage was also left laying outside the planes just on the tarmac. But even if the carts had roofs and the luggage was left under the wings, rain doesn't fall straight down and it was left out for quite a while until the storm passed.
No no. If the cars had roofs they wouldn't have got wet 'cause they also have tarp curtains. I'm not quite sure why you're trying to defend someone who ruined your stuff (that I'm sure you had to pay an extra baggage fee for) but again. I suppose every airport is different and probably did not have the roof... no no I'm still having trouble seeing it. It's called a tarp and it takes next to no time to throw them overtop.
It's a good thing you're so lighthearted about it! :P I suppose you're probably think no harm, no foul, eh?

Dunno.. TBH I've never seen tarps on a baggage cart. usually they're open to the air.
I'm defending them because they're just doing their jobs. If it was just rain then they'd have kept working and secured things but sightings of lightning basically means the procedure is to drop everything and get inside. Safety comes first and all that.

Yes yes, I understand safety first... and if there were no tarps I wouldn't blame 'em either. The point is the airport should supply them with the means. Again, what the heck are you paying them for if there going to ruin your stuff. Aw well. It can't be helped I guess. As long as you furs are okay.
Possibly the reason for no tarps is that if an employee isn't careful and leaves a tarp on the ground and leaves it there, it becomes FOD for an aircraft (gets blown around, then sucked into an engine). So, airports try to keep as many loose things on the tarmac to a minimum (and I should know considering I was in the Air Force, and we were constantly drilled about FOD on the tarmac)
Look like you were flying on Untited Air Lines with the blue and white tape on the box. Did you ask if they have any bags? since most of the time the airline would only have the ones for car seats not boxs. and if it was pouring out there isn't much they can do since the bag handlers are trying to get all the baggage off the plane on to the carts as quickly as they can to get to baggage clam. I know since I work at an airport pushing wheelchairs for like 4 and a have years to know how the airlines run....
I just read a bit of the comments. they left the bags out side of the plane. thats a bit off. but I also know not all the bag carts for the airlines have roofs on them. So if there is bad weather the bags are going to take a hit. Unless its a T-storm then no one is going to be out side at that time.
But I sorry to see that the box get tworen open like that.
