Prompt: stake
“I’m in,” the aardvark said as his turn came up, tossing the requisite number of chips onto the growing pile in the center of the table. He sat back, waiting for the dealer to start giving him his cards. “What?”
One of the other players pointed. “Who the hell are they?” the hyena asked.
The aardvark glanced behind him at the five furs clustered a couple yards behind him. “They put up the money for me to play,” he replied, nodding at the pile of chips in front of him. “I win, they get a proportional share.”
“They might peek at our cards,” the hyena said suspiciously.
“Or they might give the game away if I’m bluffing,” the aardvark said equably. “It evens out, and they’re too far away to whisper in my ear. They also promised to sit behind me and not move around the room. So,” he asked the dealer, “you going to start the game or not?”
The dealer shrugged and started doling out the cards as the aardvark’s shareholders conferred among themselves.
