Time for a big Spooktober artwork from me! This time featuring the menacing alien Tripod Fighting Machines from the 2005 film version of "War of the Worlds". I wanted to draw them for a long time, especially after I have already drew the 1906 version.
Once you hear their horns, there's no escape from them!

Ah yes, the Spielberg version. Honestly I think it's underrated. Tom Cruise was good in it.
Though one nitpick I've always had with it...if the aliens had those tripods planted in the Earth for millions of years with the intention to some day use them to invade the planet...why did they wait millions of years to do it? Why didn't they just do their whole teraforming thing when they'd only have to contend with mammoths and apes with pointy sticks? Also in EVERY version of the story INCLUDING the book...how careless were those aliens to not consider "Hey maybe we don't have the antibodies to counter the microbes on that planet and thus should remain in our pressurized environment suits at all times while doing this?"

Sorry for the late reply, lol
If I remember right, the shooting script for the movie describes a brief glimpse of the aliens' planet where a ruined, futuristic city and some scarce red weed would've been shown. I wished they would have included that, because it may have shown that the invasion of Earth was a desperate move in part of the aliens (just like in the novel), which were already dying in their home planet, and so they came unprepared and perished in the process. Basically Earth was to them what a fallout shelter is to us, a refugee once everything goes to hell, lol
And a headcanon of mine regarding the more recent BBC version is that the Martians were meant to die on Earth, since their only single mission is terraforming the planet with the Black Smoke and Red Weed, so that the actual Martians (the aliens shown in the series didn't look like they could build those tripods and they behaved more like animals, which is why I think the real masterminds behind the invasion are unseen) could invade Earth with no difficulty once the next opposition comes. Of course, that's just a theory of mine and the miniseries doesn't develop those concepts, especially since the series has an abrupt ending and no real conclusion, lol

Okay...two issues with that theory. 1, with all that advanced technology, why not just build bigger space stations and ship to live in, using asteroids in their own and neighboring systems to mine materials? 2, why were their tripods buried underground for millions of years? Why wait so long to enact their plan if they'd already seeded the Earth before humans evolved?
Really it's the issue I (and many a science nerd) have with alien invasion plots, or even the "grabby aliens" hypothesis of the Fermi Paradox. Why fight a ground war with a civilization that can fight back when you can just extract all the raw materials (including water and organic compounds) from uninhabited planets or even asteroids?
Yes I know I probably sound really pedantic but as I said, science nerd I watch a lot of space science channels like Star Talk, Anton Petrov, Scishow, Astrum, V101 Space, Fraser Cane, Dr. Becky and Cool Worlds.
