Callichimaera perplexa is an extinct true crab that I've learned about through my marine science classes here at college. (also one of the reasons I haven't posted in a while)
FUN FACTS!
1. It belongs to the crab lineage: C. perplexa is a true crab because phylogenetic analyses place it within the evolutionary group of true crabs.
2. It was a 95-million-year-old Cretaceous crab nicknamed the "platypus of crabs" due to its strange, unique body plan, which defied typical crab features.
3. The fossil was first discovered in the Andes of Colombia in 2005 and has since been found in other locations, including Wyoming.
4. It was the size about the size of a U.S. quarter.
I will be posting more marine creatures, as I go through my classes. We've been doing field research on sharks and string rays, so that might be next on my list.
