Zira is born as a rogue to Hatari, a lion who was determined to have his own line rule the Pridelands. Her upbringing is a harsh one, her father teaching her to fight and making her train until the point of exhaustion, telling her that love and kindness shouldn't be allowed to get in the way of what you want. At one point, she tries to fight back against him when he berates her mother Bia for losing a litter, which results in a notch in her right ear, her father telling her that it was a reminder to never cross him again. Hatari's desire for a son later results in her mother Bia conceiving another litter, but Hatari never gets to meet them as he and his cobra companion are found dead one day, both having been killed by some unseen force. Zira is secretly glad that her cruel father is gone, but Bia is torn up over his loss. She later gives birth to two daughters named Kimya and Kuchanua, but she sadly falls ill and dies when they're barely weaned.
After leading her two young sisters out of their former home, Zira and her surviving family end up wandering into the Pridelands’ territory and draw the attention of the patrolling Lion Guard, led by a dark-maned male male with green eyes and a recent scar across his left eye. After being brought to the pride's king Ahadi, Zira is allowed to stay once she tells him that she and her young sisters have nowhere else to go. As her sisters grow, Zira becomes drawn to the lion who found her, a male who preferred to be called by the name “Scar”. She especially becomes drawn to him once she finds out that he was the one who killed her father, having used a great power called the Roar Of The Elders when his cobra companion attacked him. In her eyes, Scar was a hero, one who freed her from her cruel father. And since he was her hero, Zira was willing to do anything for him. Scar soon takes notice of this and secretly tells her of his plans to take the throne.
When Scar eliminates his guard and loses the ability to use the Roar, Zira chases down a male named Chenza who witnessed the event and seemingly gets rid of him once he takes a fall and hits his head pretty hard. And when the rest of the pride asks what happened, Zira backs up Scar's story that killing his guard was indeed an accident. After Scar disposes of his brother and nephew and takes the throne for himself, he later chooses Zira as his mate after she and Sarabi both bear cubs that were sired by him, a position that she happily takes. She now had it all: a place on a royal throne, her beloved hero as her mate, and they both had a strong and handsome son who would one day take the throne. She couldn't have been any happier.
After their teenage son Kamili suddenly disappears from the Pridelands following the death of Uru, Scar is now without a proper heir, and he decides to try for another son with Zira. This results in a scraggly male cub named Nukato, and while he wasn't exactly the perfect son that Kamili had been, Scar still expected him to strengthen as he grew. However, that turned out to not be the case as not only was Nukato lacking in physical strength, he wasn't exactly the smartest cub in the world, either. Zira is more than willing to try again and soon conceives another litter, but by then the Pridelands was beginning to experience a drought, the worst one since the reign of King Mohatu. Around this time, a small pride from the Outlands shows up to ask Scar for help, as their former territory had been hit hard by the drought, and Svar allows them to start under the condition that they swear allegiance to him. Since Zira was the king's mate, Scar made sure that she would have enough of whatever food was still available, and their latest attempt resulted in two daughters. Around the same time, Zira's sister Kimya gives birth to a cub named Kheri that she had conceived with a rogue, and asks her to take him since she was unable to nurse him. When Scar comes to see the cubs, he surprisingly picks little Kheri to be his new heir, even when Zira clarifies that he was her sister's cub and not his, renaming the little cub “Kovu”. By then, things were looking dire for the Pridelands, as the drought was still going on and many of the herds had moved on. But Zira was optimistic. Her beloved Scar finally had his perfect heir, a cub from her own family tree no less, so things could only get better from here!
One day, Zira leads her own hunting party to find food. They manage to find and take down a single wildebeest that had been left behind by its herd, but by the time they return to Pride Rock, things weren't exactly the same as when they had left.
Scar, her beloved hero and king, had been killed. And Simba, his nephew who was long presumed dead, was on top of Pride Rock roaring, proclaiming himself as the new king. And everyone else was roaring with him! How could they be happy? Their king had just been killed by an usurper! Zira quickly confronts Simba and tells him that he can't be king since Scar had picked the young cub Kovu -who fortunately had been protected from the fire that engulfed Pride Rock- to be the new heir. Simba tells her that Scar was a murderer and not the real king, but Zira refused to listen to reason and attacked him. The battle was very brief, and after that Simba declares Zira too dangerous to stay and has her and the rest of Scar's followers banished from the Pridelands.
From that day onward, Zira vowed to get revenge and have Kovu placed on the throne, just as Scar wanted. Life in the Outlands is difficult, but Zira and her family manage to get by either by poaching food from other animals or even resorting to eating termites on occasion. Her sister Kimya didn't approve of her raising Kheri to be an usurper, and one night, she tries to flee the Outlands with the barely weaned cub. Zira tries to stop her from taking Kovu, and during the scuffle to wrestle the cub out of her grip, Zira ends up throwing her against a large rock, the blow to the head killing her instantly. After overcoming the initial horror of killing her own sister, Zira forces Kuchanua -who had witnessed the whole thing- to never tell anyone of what had just happened, dragging Kimya’s body to the nearby river to make it look like she had been killed by the local crocodiles while getting a drink.
Zira's mental state only got worse from there, becoming obsessed with revenge and treating her son Nukato -now calling him “Nuka”- more harshly. She also tells Kovu growing up that he was an orphan that Scar took in and has her fellow pridemates do the same, not wanting him to know of his true origins. After Kovu ends up meeting Simba’s daughter after Nuka allowed him to wander off, she gets the brilliant idea to have him infiltrate the pride and take down Simba from within, giving him intense training as the years go by. She at one point tries to corrupt Simba's son Kion when he and his friends come into the Outlands, but the young lion is not swayed by her and uses the Roar Of The Elders to send her packing. In time, Kovu manages to infiltrate the Pridelands after saving her from a fire made by Nuka and Shetani, but one thing she wasn't counting on was Kovu betraying her.
After Nuka's death following an attempted ambush on Simba, Zira leads the Outsiders into battle to take down Simba once and for all, only to be thwarted by both Kiara AND Kovu. Refusing to let it go, Zira makes one last desperate attack on Simba, but is thrown off course by Kiara. The two tumble down a ravine and Zira soon finds herself dangling above some raging rapids, with Kiara reaching out to try and help her. Zira loses her grip on the rock she's clinging to, but as she falls to her death, she smiles.
She was about to see Scar again.
Just realized that I never uploaded this on here. Anyway, this is my ref sheet for Zira that I originally drew back in 2020. I'm posting it here because I finally wrote down a backstory for Zira that I like.
