The Creator State found a way to mineralize the brain, making it essentially immortal at the cost of its soul, so to speak - all the glandular stuff that makes a person really interesting. Well it went badly in about 90% of cases and what they claimed was a 'lost soul' was actually a horribly broken, deformed consciousness no smarter than your average zombie. So instead of telling the relatives, they just installed the broken mind into automation and pretended it was 'smart'. Instead of zombies, you've got creepy shambling mannequins with luxury clothing. It all ended in tears.
