Raz (Crash Bandicoot OC)
"Welcome to Miss Meryes's Potion Shop! My name is Raz! Feel free to take a look around, and don't be shy to ask me for help!"
Full Name: Raspberry
Other Names: Razzle (by Crunch); Berry Bunch (by Dingodile); Razzy (by Coco); Subject RZ-96 (by Cortex and his minions/allies)
VA: Max Mittelman
Age: Late 20s (same as Crunch)
Species: Short-tailed bat
Gender: Cis Male
Residence: Port Town
Occupation: Museum assistant to Ripper Roo; Witch-in-training
Orientation: Gay (sexually and romantically)
Biography: An easy life had never been in the cards for Raz.
One of Cortex's older successful experiments (at first), he was supposed to be the perfect lab assistant, competent enough to run circles around the likes of N. Brio and N. Gin. Unfortunately, while the young bat indeed had plenty smarts, the pressures of being second banana to a creator bent on world conquest doesn't exactly lend to stable mental health, especially when you don't have an evil bone in your body. Add in being born with bad eyesight, being born into an environment less than accommodating to his autism, and a tendency to flub things up when nervous - a regular enough occurrence that most of the other experiments came to view the bat as a jinx and so often avoided him - and its no small wonder Raz kept having mental breakdowns.
If any silver lining existed for Raz in those days, it would be in the jockish bandicoot and his two sprightly "younger siblings", Crash and Coco, who always knew how to bring a smile to the beleaguered bat's face, as well as Tawna he often vented to and even Dingodile who seemed to develop a bizarre fondness for the younger browbeaten mutant - the hybrid was even the one who gave the young bat his current name.
Until one day Neo Cortex and his cronies took Crunch away out of nowhere, leaving Raz to fill in as the older sibling to Crash and Coco. Didn't help either that Raz kept hearing rumors among the other mutants about some of their own already being handed off for another "special experiment" Cortex had in mind for everyone.
Enter the Cortex Vortex, a machine designed to render all of Cortex's experiments into his slaves - and an unfinished one at that judging by the effects it had on Raz, who only volunteered first to give his bandicoot friends time to escape. The machine left the poor bat a shellshocked mess, his autonomy still intact yet his mind riddled with shock-induced trauma that he was no longer in any state to properly serve as a lab assistant.
So as he did with all rejects, Cortex tossed Raz out with not a second thought, cutting the poor guy off from his friends.
Wumpa God knows how long Raz spent wondering the jungle, addled mind a fog, before a kind old lady came across the bat and offered him shelter at her potion shop. Turns out this lady was a kindly witch who had a bone or two to pick with Cortex and his buddies on account of all the unfortunate little animals made victims by those men's twisted experiments. In fact, after realizing where Raz came from, the witch offered to teach him spells for self-defense in exchange for the young man helping around the shop.
A sweet deal, to say the least, but Raz couldn't bring himself to leave Crash and Coco to the fate Cortex had in store for them, so (with great fear) ventured back to Cortex's base, armed with potions courtesy of the witch.
As luck would have it, Raz wound up crossing paths with a recently escaped Crash who also somehow managed to resist the Cortex Vortex and now sought to return to the mad scientist's castle to save Tawna and Coco. Despite his own reservations, Raz would prove instrumental in helping Crash get through all the enemies in their way, including some of their former labmates like Ripper Roo and Pinstripe. Together, the pair would succeed in saving the girls as well as destroying Cortex's lair.
Since then, Raz has slowing been coming into his own as a mage under the kindly witch's tutelage. He's pitched in from time to time in Crash and Coco's subsequent adventures, usually serving as a support character that can drop health and sometimes even powerups along the way, especially during boss fights. Raz also happened to cross paths with Catbat after a run-in where Raz, out of the kindness of his heart, helped his fellow bat out of a bind with N. Brio. In exchange, Catbat repaid the favor by teaching Raz a couple survival skills.
Not long after Crash and Coco's third adventure, though, the potion shop wound up falling on hard times. As luck would have it, Raz one day came across an ad for the position museum assistant, a job that would pay well enough for him and even leave enough leftover to send back to the witch in gratitude for all she'd done for him. Raz would have reservations at first once he realized his boss would be Ripper Roo from Cortex’s lab, only to be assured in their first meeting by Professor Roo himself that his days of mania were long behind him. Sure enough, the rehabilitated marsupial turned out to be a competent and well-meaning employer, even to the point of fulfilling a sort of fatherly role in Raz's life.
Between the potion shop and the museum, Raz was too swamped with work to help out during the events of It's About Time. However, he'd get an earful of the mishaps from Crash and company once they returned from saving the universe from interdimensional collapse. What's more, Catbat dropped by to notify their pal Raz that they'd just acquired a new gang from right under Papa Batfield's nose and would gladly offer free protection to the witch's shop in between raids on Cortex's tech (partially to help an old friend out, partially so everyone could spite Papa Batfield - he and the potion shop owner had a bit of history, he was the one behind Dingodile's diner getting trashed much to Raz's outrage, and he refused to pay the Wumpashiners after Dingodile blew up their base).
All in all, things seemed to be going swell - until one workday when a tall musclebound (and familiarly handsome) bandicoot busted into the museum one day and kidnapped Raz as leverage against Roo, working under the suspicion that the marsupial was harboring one of the Celestial Masks capable of stopping Uka Uka and the Elementals.
Things can just never be easy for Raz, can they?
Personality: Raz has always been an anxious fellow by nature, usually wracked by what-ifs and just the general chance of things going wrong. He's also not the bravest person, due largely to a lack of confidence from years of verbal abuse from Cortex and the other scientists. However, time under the potion shop owner as well as time with his friends has done wonders in helping him grow more of a backbone - and a bit of a sassy side too - although he still has his moments of self-doubt.
He's also always been a very kind and empathetic person, consistently looking out for others even when doing so puts him at risk, even though he can come off as smothering as a result. Meticulous and hardworking, Raz always commits to the very end and strives to leave no stone unturned - whether it be on his jobs, a mission, or an adventure with the others. Like Catbat, Raz is a loyal and dedicated individual who never forgets a helping hand and will stick with you to the very end.
Just promise to be careful, OK?
Relationships:
Crash and Coco - Raz is on pretty good terms with them, having long been a sort of surrogate big brother to them ever since Crunch's disappearance. The two siblings can be a real handful, though, given how easily trouble seems to find them. Still, they can always come to Raz for advice whenever something's bugging them.
Aku Aku: Raz has nothing for respect for the witch doctor, who's been a constant guide for Crash and Coco and has even provided his aid to Raz whenever possible. Plus, the wooden mask makes for a decent therapist for Raz.
Ripper Roo - Raz used to keep an understandably wide berth around him way back then, but nowadays the rehabilitated marsupial is doing much better for himself and even providing a service to the community despite his past. Ever since coming under his employment, Raz has gotten to better know the man and grown to respect him greatly. He's even come to point that he'll sometimes go to the professor for fatherly advice.
Neo Cortex (and all the N. Guys) - They can jump into the nearest volcano for all Raz cares.
Crunch Bandicoot - There'd always been something there between the two of them, even back then. Raz always coveted Crunch's resilience and Crunch always admired Raz's insistence on being kind despite being a mad scientist's experiment. Even after their separation, Raz has done his best to try emulating what he admired in Crunch and never forgot all the times the bandicoot stood up for him - and now that they've reunited, the bat can finally return the favor.
Dingodile - To say the normally vicious fire-happy hybrid makes for a weird uncle-figure would be a severe understatement. Believe it or not, Dingodile has always had an inexplicable soft spot for Raz and is always happy to offer the boy a homecooked (and mostly inedible) meal whenever necessary.
Skills/Abilities: As the longtime apprentice of an accomplished witch, Raz has come to know various magics. On the offensive side, he has access to Fire, Ice, Bolt, Wind, and Earth spells. As for support, he's a lifesaver with his Heal and Revive spells and do away with any nasty ailments with Cleanse. And if he and his friends are ever in a bind, he can cast Teleport to get everyone out in a pinch.
On the more mundane side, he's got several basic life skills under his belt (sewing and cooking just to name a few). He's also a whiz at voice acting, capable of pulling off so many different voices that you wouldn't believe they're all coming from the same person.
