There's nothing around but a field, an old barn, and a windmill standing for miles ahead. You feel a sense of dread and the smell of tobacco, just before a stranger's smoke-roughened voice sounds behind you.
"Come in peace?" You flinch at the unexpected question and turn around. The creature stood so close that you could see every strand of straw in its body.
"Because those handsome fellows over there didn't." It nods its head towards a dozen eerie scarecrows in the field. "My whole 'collection' started with the same kind of carelessness. Don't become the next exhibit. Because I run damn fast."

A few facts about them:

All the scarecrows in the field, except for themself, are former thieves who tried to encroach on their land and paid with their lives. At first, they simply used them as fertilizer, but later decided to directly show potential robbers what awaits them if they try to mess with them.

They smoke a lot, which gives them a low voice and sometimes causes them to burst into flames, as they are literally made of hay. However, they cannot burn to death or be killed by fire, but they can chase you with eerie laughter while accidentally setting their own fields on fire.

They run very fast. Extremely fast. Despite their thin stick-legs, they can cross their entire field from end to end in a couple of minutes. Because of this, you can see the tall stalks of the plants parting at an incredible speed when they are chasing someone.

They can speak the language of crows, which makes them friends with birds rather than enemies. Besides, it's easier to negotiate with birds than with people. So, if you see them cawing back at a crow, it means they are having an engrossing conversation.
