It's antifilm.
This was a roll of Early Grey black and white film. When I took it in to get developed I got this back. Something went horribly wrong in manufacture because it's just plastic. There was never any film on this roll to begin with. The guy who developed the film was flabbergasted, apparently he'd never seen this before.

It could be. The spliced-on leader they use for motion picture film is usually opaque so you can tell the difference easily. This looks like regular film that just doesn't have any emulsion on it. The bit of leader on the end of a roll is regular film. It just gets exposed when you're loading and unloading it.
