Gus entered the dorm holding a book in his hand. He stood over the blue fox and asked, "Say, Alfonzo, how about a tarot reading."
Alfonzo grinned, "Sure, what's your question?" He handed Gus the card deck and the rabbit began to shuffle.
"I wonder why I have trouble remembering my past memories with my family. I wish I could find out why I feel my family is not my family." Gus replied. He noticed Alfonzo's smile getting smaller. As he shuffled, Gus was beginning to fidget in his seat. Gus finished shuffling and handed the deck back to Alfonzo. "Are you alright, friend?" the buck rabbit asked.
"Me, I'm alright." Alfonzo said. Gus knew he clearly was not. Something was bothering him. "Well, let's pull out the first card." Alfonzo pulled out the world card. "The world card shows the completion of a journey--." Alfonzo began to sweat.
"A spiritual journey?" Gus asked.
"Y-yes, when you began questioning your place in the universe." Alfonzo said. He pulled out the second card. "The present card is 'the Fool' which means the beginning of a new journey. The only thing you are taking with you is past experiences from past lives." Alfonzo pulled out the third card. "Your future is the seven of wands which means you are going to face oppositions from others. People are not going to be happy about what you take your life's journey as and may fight you over it."
Gus nodded, "Alfonzo, are you hiding something from me--or shall I say about me?"
"What do you mean?" the fox asked uneasily.
Gus lifted up the book and showed it to Alfonzo. The title read, "So You are a Walk-in, What Next?" Gus said, "I asked the question and the cards where correct. I could also tell by your nervousness. The past card represents the soul that once lived in this body left and my soul entered when I had that motorcycle accident. That is why I have trouble associating my biological family as my family. The present card represents the fact that I am starting a new journey in someone else's body. The other person's soul went to the spiritual realm and quite possibly has reincarnated as someone else. And the final card means that I am going to have conflicts with the other soul's old friends and family because of the fact the I am a walk-in and that some might not like my take on spiritual reality."
Alfonzo scratched his head uneasily. "How--did you find out?"
"I researched it." Gus shrugged. "How long have you known about my spiritual condition?"
Tears started welling up in Alfonzo's eyes. "If I told you about that you are a walk-in, you might have not believed me. I never knew the original soul who inhabited your body but I heard stories about him being suave and flirting with the women. Since the accident, everyone who knew the other soul was devastated. I found a friend in you and I was afraid I would loose your friendship with you."
"I looked at the journal that the other soul wrote." Gus said. "Despite the fact he was a playboy and hung out with the "cool guys" he was also depressed. He wanted to have more meaning in his existence and he couldn't find it. It was written the day of the accident. I read about soul contracts in this book. When Gus's body was in the hospital, his soul made a contract with my soul. He would start a new life reincarnated as someone else while my soul would live in his body and start a new journey here." Gus placed his hand on Alfonzo's shoulder. "I'm not angry, Alfonzo, I respect the fact that you did not press your discoveries on me and let me find the truth on my own. Even if you did tell me, I would have questioned you, not turn you away. You have been very supportive of me and I couldn't have asked for a better friend."
Alfonzo sniffled, "Thank you for understanding."
Gus held out his arms, "Now bring it in." The fox embraced the rabbit. Gus hugged Alfonzo. "Our friendship is so strong nothing will break it."
"Not even the mammalians who doubt us?" Alfonzo asked.
"Not even the doubters can stop our bond?" Gus said comfortingly.
They stopped hugging but held each others hands. "What about Drake? He has no home but here?" Alfonzo asked.
"He is home with us. We will fight the secret space program and make sure they will not take him away from us. He is a friend, and we will not leave a friend behind." the rabbit said firmly.
"Couldn't have said it better myself." Alfonzo said. The two friends hugged each other once more and enjoyed every moment of it.
