Had a brain storming session yesterday regarding a setting I found fascinating.
A giant eldritch god-thing has descended upon a small town, it's inhabitants are fucking terrified and start trying to flee the town. The god-thing carves in terrain and buildings with it's tentacles for a while, but then doesn't seem to do anything for a few hours, until the military decides to attack it with fighter jets. The entity doesn't like that and it fires a death beam into the town.
What happens after that is completely unknown, some people have speculated that maybe the entire world ends, maybe the continent is wiped out.
Everyone who was in the town when the god-thing arrived re-appears there again, some confused and some terrified. In health condition they were in when the event began. People who fled the town don't recall the past few hours, but people who stayed do.
It seems like time was reverted to when the entity first descended upon the town. Some people find that the internet still works in some areas, and they notice that seemingly the entire world went back in time a few hours. And no one but the inhabitants of the town remember.
Over several "cycles", the inhabitants figure out several facts about their predicament.
- A cycle is "finished" when the entity fires off it's death ray into the town, killing everyone still there.
Everyone who gets killed by the beam gets to carry over their memories and consciousness back in time, while everyone who died to unrelated reasons gets "reset" to how they were at the start of this disaster.
- Sometimes small parts of the god-thing detach from it's body. Those parts animate and attack people, the smaller ones have been nicknamed "tentacle dogs". The bigger ones have been sometimes referred to as "dragons".
- Those creatures can be killed by excessive blunt force trauma, they'll dissolve into a goo that has some very interesting properties on a human body.
The goop, when applied to a part of the body, allows a person to alter their body with conscious effort. These changes inexplicably persist between cycles, even if the person dies and forgets about changing their body this way.
These alterations can range from minor cosmetic body mods like recoloring the body, body shape alteration. To more drastic changes to better adapt to the new landscape, like bone hooks on one's arms, a bone blade replacing one arm, reshaping the body to a more animal-like shape, covering one's body in chitin to better withstand damage.
There are people who underwent extreme alterations, said to want to eventually rival the god-thing that's hanging above the town. Those people are sometimes mistaken for the hostile dragons that roam the town.
