It's etymilogy is derivative of the wings resembling the skin of the ear. OvO or so legend goes. And yes earwigs have actual been found in ears, but so have spiders, wasps and ants who mistakenly took shelter there. Earwigs are one of the few lil guys I studied, woodlice, grasshoppers, some spiders milli/centipedes and opilliones(my favourite) . Recently Ladybirds and dragonfly's.

Yes it can happen that they find themselves in an ear but it is very rare. My sister had ear pain because a bug found itself in her ear I think last year or earlier this year, it can absolutely happen, but it's not as common as people may fear it to be. :3 And earwigs certainly don't intentionally seek out ears or are any more likely to crawl into one than other small arthropods. Yeah they may want to seek out humid places to be, but finding one's ear is not likely to happen even then. So to be fair, me stating it to be "complete nonsense" isn't entirely accurate, I should have specified that it is simply much more uncommon than the myth makes it seem.
