Now granted this is my light summer jacket, and the shoulder is breathable mesh. But the reason the shoulder is breathable mesh is because there is a piece of armour there. It's not there any more, because the hole is so wide that you can take it out from the outside. You'll see the armour piece in the next picture.

However, you'll notice that where the jacket is not mesh, it's ballistic nylon. And the mesh parts are backed up with armour in the joints. It did it's job perfectly. Aside from the broken collarbone, I have a little cut on my leg and an abrasion on my right elbow. That is the extent of my injuries.
