Chapter 04
Jack comes back and he has borrowed the Fiat, mostly to feel how it feels to drive this car and he realizes that Ford and Opel are much better cars. Jack puts the potato salad he bought in the fridge and the bags of chips he bought on the table in the kitchen. Jack hadn't planned to buy chips but they were cheap so why not. Jack goes out to the living room and looks at the rest of the family.
"Sorry it took so long but there was a long line at the store. Well, here you sit. What's up?"
Bertil scratches his hair.
"We were waiting for you. Kajsa has planned something, whatever it may be."
"Sounds interresting."
It gets very quiet and no one does anything but they sit where they are while Jack remains standing by the sofa. Jack looks at the others with a strange look.
"Who has died?"
Göran looks up with a questioning expression
"No one has died. We're just sitting and chilling, bro."
Jack nods to himself but he doesn't seem to really believe Göran.
"Right, let go for that but where's the pep? Where's our usual action? Well, now it's time to get going and get active. Say after me; Day-ooo."
Göran and Bertil look very questioning but Kajsa understands exactly what Jack means and she stands up and calls Day-ooo. Then she makes an upward movement with her hands to indicate that the others should stand up, which they do after a few seconds. Kajsa speaks up.
"Well my plan is this. A few years before mother got sick, she talked about cleaning the attic and keeping what we wanted to keep and throwing away the rest, but that hasn't happened as far as I know. That's why I think we can have it as a family activity today. The villa is going to be sold, so we just have to get started. Göran, you can get the ladder. By the way, Jack, if you want, we can listen to Harry Belafonte. He's the one who sings that song that you and I started singing."
Göran nods because he also thinks it's a good idea to clean out the attic, but he gives Kajsa a teasing look.
"Okay, we can listen to Harry Belafonte, but I'm not going to dance rumba like in the movie Beetlejuice. That's far of my limit."
Kajsa understands exactly what Göran means and she grins at him.
"All you need to do is get the ladder and open the attic hatch. I'll leave the rumba dancing to... Bertil maybe."
Bertil shakes his head in the background. He doesn't plan on dancing any rumba, but cleaning out the attic sounds like a good idea. Bertil had planned on cleaning out the attic this week, but it never happened because other things got in the way. But now that it's the weekend and everyone is together, it sounds like a good idea.
Göran goes to get the ladder to the attic while Kajsa goes to the stereo. Bertil no longer has any records, but it is possible to connect the mobile phone to the stereo so that the music on the mobile phone is played through the speakers. Kajsa first thinks of playing an album by Harry Belanfonte, but then chooses a playlist with mixed music and she knows that Bertil and the rest of the family like most of the songs on the playlist. This playlist is mostly light pop, but there are also some rock songs. Kajsa presses play and the first song starts playing. It is a song by Vikingarna. Not exactly the kind of thing the family listens to, but it is a fun song. Jack laughs in the background when the song starts.
Göran comes back and places the ladder against the hall wall and gets a high chair that he can stand on. Göran opens the attic hatch with the help of the flat chisel. The attic hatch opens and Göran pulls down the cord to the light bulb so that the plug can be inserted into a suitable electrical outlet. Jack plugs the electrical plug and the light in the attic turns on. Göran places the ladder at the opening and starts climbing up to the attic. Kajsa puts on her shoes and goes up the ladder when Göran is up.
The attic hatch is in the middle of the attic and the attic itself is wide. When Kajsa comes up, she is met by the Christmas things. Bertil has placed the Christmas things very close to the opening. Monika would never have done that. On both sides of the attic, several bookcases, cabinets, hanging clothes storage and several antique lamps spread out. It looks very messy.
Since it's below zero outside, it's not that warm in the attic, but there's heat coming from the pipe from the tiled stove, so the attic doesn't feel completely chilled. The wood creaks under Kajsa's feet and the bare light bulb sways slightly when Göran happens to touch the long cord. Göran seems to be listening to the music coming from downstairs and he grins broadly.
"Dance band, huh? That's kind of background music or whatever it's called. It's the kind of crap that's played in elevators on ships or in big stores"
"Well, it's fun and cheerful. There'll be other faster music later."
Kajsa looks around. There are so many things here that it is difficult to decide where to start. Kajsa reaches out and grabs an antique lamp. This lamp has never been used in the villa and it looks like it is from the 1950s and its obvious its not working. Göran also looks at the lamp and shrugs.
"Well, we can definitely throw that one away"
Jack comes up to the attic and he sings along to the song that is playing downstairs. Jack sees the lamp that Kajsa is holding and he reaches for it.
"That one is electrically dangerous. We'll take it down immediately and put it in the pile of things that need to be thrown away."
Kajsa gives the lamp to Jack and he goes down the ladder and soon steps are heard coming up the ladder but it's not Jack who comes back but Bertil. Bertil has several large garbage bags with him. Neither Kajsa nor Göran thought that they should bring garbage bags with them, but Bertil has thought of that. Bertil rolls out two large garbage bags and gives them to Göran and Kajsa.
"Everything that is not bulky is to be thrown into the garbage bags. We have to help each other carry down what is bulky."
Jack comes up to the attic again and stands next to Bertil. Bertil rolls out two more garbage bags and gives one to Jack and keeps the other for himself. Bertil looks around and nods to himself.
"Okay, to make it more easy, we'll do like this. Kajsa and Jack take the left side of the attic while Göran and I take the right side and we'll meet in the middle. I have absolutely no idea what's on the bookshelves and so on. We'll have to check that out. Monika probably knew but she's no longer alive so we'll have to do this in the best way possible."
Everyone thinks Bertil has a good idea and they go their separate ways. Kajsa and Jack go the furthest to the left and the first thing she sees is her metal coffin that she got when she was 10 years old. Kajsa never took the metal coffin with her when she moved from home and she has no idea what it contains. Kajsa opens the coffin and sees that it contains a lot of school books. Kajsa rummages through the school books and decides to throw them away but she wants to take the coffin to the city tomorrow when she drives home. Kajsa starts to fill the garbage bag with all the school books. She will never look at them again and she doesn’t miss school.
Jack is standing at a large bookshelf that is right next to Kajsa’s metal coffin and he looks at the books that are on the top. Jack can see that these are really old books and he is sure that they are not something to save. Some of them are collected volumes of abridged books and neither Bertil nor anyone else in the family is interested in reading them. All the books have yellowed pages and smell strongly of old dust. Jack starts to fill the garbage bag with books.
Kajsa's metal coffin is empty and she stands looking at it. After a few seconds, Kajsa turns to Jack.
"The coffin is empty but I was thinking of taking the coffin to my apartment. Should we carry it down now or should we wait?"
"We can do it now if that's okay with you."
"I can put it in the room I had when I lived at home."
"It'll probably be fine. If you lift on your side, I'll lift on my side."
Kajsa and Jack lift the coffin on each side and it's not as heavy as Kajsa thought it would be but it takes up a lot of space and they have to tilt it vertically when they take it down from the attic. Jack has the best balance so it's decided that he will go first and take the most weight. When they get to the ladder, they tilt the coffin so that it's vertical and Jack starts to walk down the ladder. Jack is strong and it doesn't take long for the coffin to be downstairs. Kajsa goes down the ladder and Jack and she help put the coffin in Kajsa's room. That room is used as an extra room in case any visitors stay overnight and Kajsa sees that she has several things there that she didn't take with her when she moved. But she doesn't plan on checking those things right now. Jack and Kajsa go back up to the attic.
Meanwhile, Göran has found some of Jack's car toys in a big plastic bag in the attic, but he has also found his Transformers toys. Oh, how much he played with them when he was young. Göran feels nostalgic about the toys and he is wondering if he should save them. Bertil in turn has found several vinyl singles and when he looks at them he doesn't understand why they are here, but then he recognizes them. Bertil played these vinyl singles the whole evening before he married Monika. They meant something to him then but not anymore. Bertil thinks that the vinyl singles could perhaps be donated instead of thrown away because he knows that many younger people collect vinyl records.
Jack and Kajsa are standing by the large bookshelf and at the very bottom is Kajsa's portable stereo that she got when she was 13. This portable stereo was special because it contained both a double tape player and a smaller vinyl player. Kajsa could take vinyl singles with her and play them when she visited the beach and other places, but the vinyl player used a lot of battery so she could play a maximum of 12 vinyl singles before the batteries went bad. In addition, sand easily got into the turntable, which destroyed the device. It was better to play cassette tapes because it didn't use as much battery.
Kajsa doesn't feel nostalgic when she sees the old portable stereo, quite the opposite. Kajsa has a big party speaker at home and she plugs in her phone and plays the music she wants to hear. The party speaker is so effective that the windows vibrate if Kajsa plays loud music, but she shows respect to her neighbors and plays it so quietly that she doesn't disturb anyone. Kajsa doesn't own any physical records or cassette tapes because all the music she wants to hear is on Spotify. This also means that there can be no wear and tear on records or cassette tapes. Kajsa decides that the portable stereo should be thrown away and she pulls it out of the bookshelf and gives it to Jack.
"We can throw this one away. No one wants it anyway. It used up a lot of battery."
"Then I'll take it down and put it by the garbage pile. Heh, I feel like an errand boy."
"Oh, sorry. I can take it down."
"No, that's okay. My legs will get an extra workout."
Jack walks over to the ladder while Kajsa continues to look in the bookshelf and she sees a leathery brown folder and becomes curious about what it contains. Kajsa has never seen this folder before and she can see that it is very thick. Kajsa opens the folder and sees that it contains paintings. Kajsa pulls out the first painting and she can immediately see that it is made by a very good artist. There are so many incredible details in the picture even though it only shows an elderly lady on a park bench. Kajsa wonders who painted this and she looks for a signature and finds it in the bottom left corner. It says ML and Kajsa is confused but then she understands. It is Monika who painted this but before she married Bertil because at that time her last name was Larsson.
Kajsa is browsing through the paintings and most of the paintings appear to be portraits of different people but there are several paintings with only nature motifs and they appear to come from Beneparken in the city. Monika never told that she was such a good artist and Kajsa thinks it's a shame that she's finding out now. Kajsa continues to browse the folder and the paintings start to change character and location. The name in the corner also changes because now it says ME. Jack comes back and looks over Kajsa's shoulder and he whistles.
"Those paintings are really good. Who did them?"
Kajsa is surprised when Jack is right behind her and she jumps. A painting slides out of the folder and lands on the floor but neither Jack nor Kajsa notices it. Kajsa looks at Jack.
"Monika is the one who did these paintings, our mother."
"I didn't know she was an artist."
"Neither do I. She never mentioned it. Most of the paintings seem to have been done before she got married."
"Do you think Bertil wants them?"
"You should go and ask him."
Jack takes the folder and starts to move towards the right part of the attic but then he stops and picks something up from the floor. Kajsa can't see what it is but Jack seems to get emotional and says oh.
Kajsa walks over and looks and it is a painting that Monika has done because it says ME in the bottom corner but the motif is very special. There are four unicorns outside a cave and Kajsa recognises this cave because it is in the forest behind the villa and is called Ertegrottan. Just like the other paintings, this one is also very detailed and the unicorns look so lifelike that it wouldn't be strange if they stepped off the paper and into the attic. Monika must have seen the unicorns in real life to be able to paint them so lifelike.
Kajsa remembers that Monika always warned her and Jack not to go into Ertegrottan because they could hurt themselves or get lost. According to what Monika said, the cave is very large inside and has several labyrinth-like passages. Therefore it is easy to get lost. Göran has never been a forest person and has never been warned about going into the cave. Kajsa remembers that she heard mysterious sounds from the forest several times and that Monika always calmed her down and told her that everything was okay. It's just some wild animals, she said. Maybe it was the unicorns that she heard.
Jack gives the painting to Kajsa and she studies it more closely. Each unicorn seems to have a different color and the prettiest one is sky blue. The unicorns seem to have different lengths and the largest one is light brown with white spots. Kajsa continues to study the painting until she reaches Bertil and he turns around in surprise and sees the painting. Bertil looks surprised at first but then nods slowly.
"Okay, you've found Monika's little secret. It wasn't long before she found the unicorns after we moved here and they have meant an incredible amount to her but also to me considering that..."
Bertil falls silent and it looks as if he doesn't want to say anything more. Göran has also turned around and is looking at the painting and he giggles.
"What, was she friends with the unicorns or what is that about? They are really nice by the way"
Bertil looks very thoughtful but then he sighs loudly and sits down on a chair nearby and he looks at Kajsa.
"I didn't believe her at first when she said there were unicorns in a cave in the forest but I went along and saw them and it was like magic. It was incredibly cool to see them and they seemed to like us."
Bertil smiles at the memory and Jack stands next to Bertil. It is very rare that Bertil has told anything about himself before Kajsa and Jack were born. Monika was also secretive but did tell a few things. Bertil scratches his hair and looks down at the floor as if he is ashamed.
"We both wanted a child but even though we had sex very often we didn't have a child. We hoped and hoped that the pregnancy test would show a positive but it didn't. Monika became more and more desperate and started talking about having a foster child but I was against it because it wouldn't feel like our own child. One beautiful autumn day Monika went to Ertegrottan and she was gone for a very long time and I started to wonder if I should go out and look for her. But then she came back and she looked extremely happy and said that now everything will be fine. We had sex and a few days later she did a pregnancy test and it showed a positive. She was now pregnant."
Bertil takes a short break in his story but then continues.
"A few days later I asked Monika about what had happened in the cave and she said that she had asked the unicorns for help so that she could get pregnant and they had agreed to it but on one condition, She had to sacrifice something of herself and might not live as long. She sacrificed painting and chose to have a shorter life to have you. The unicorns in turn promised to make sure that the future child would not have any fatal accidents or the like, and yesterday's event shows that they have kept their promise. Okay, there was a car accident but carbon monoxide poisoning is fatal and they made sure that you survived."
It becomes very quiet in the attic and if a pin had fallen it would have been heard. Bertil continues to tell the story.
" I thought she was crazy but at the same time I couldn't influence this and we both wanted a child. After Kajsa was born.."
Göran interrupts Bertil and he looks upset.
"So you mean the unicorns made it possible for Kajsa to be born? Is that what you're saying? Did you do the same when I was going to be born?"
Bertil clears his throat.
"They only got her pregnant once. Once Kajsa was born, it wasn't long before Jack was born. It took a few years before Göran was born, but that was probably because we didn't have sex that often after Jack was born. It was a complicated birth. Anyway, after you, Kajsa, were born, we both decided to introduce unicorns into your life so that you would be prepared when they saved you from some dangerous situation. It was part of the deal. Kajsa, you may not remember it, but we had a big poster with a unicorn on the wall by your bed. When you could talk, you called it Ben. Do you remember a Christmas when you wanted "My Little Pony" toys but got unicorns instead?"
Yes, Kajsa remembers that and she was angry because she thought it was so unfair that she didn't get any "My Little Pony" toys but unicorn toys. Unicorns look like horses but none of Kajsa's friends wanted to play with her unicorns and she felt a bit left out. Kajsa could boast of a gigantic collection of unicorns but that didn't help when her friends disliked them. Kajsa sold a large part of her unicorn collection when she moved from home but she still has some of them in her apartment in the city. Kajsa also understands why she got so many books about unicorns but one thing puzzles her and she feels compelled to ask.
"Sorry, but I'm not really following this. If I was supposed to be prepared for the unicorns, why wasn't I allowed to go to the cave and find them myself? It would have been easy and simple."
"It was because Monika thought there was a big risk that you would tell about it at school and in the worst case expose the unicorns. That wasnt alllowed to happen. They were to remain a secret except for the family."
"Apart from yesterday, did they save me from anything?"
"Yes, when you were three years old they saved you. You were out in the garden eating a sandwich and it got stuck in your throat when you swallowed. Monika and I tried to get the bread out of your throat but we couldn't. A unicorn came running and pushed you so that the bread in your throat came loose. When you were older they made loud noises when you were about to do something stupid, like the time you almost stuck a metal knife in one of the electrical outlets that are outside."
Kajsa has no memory of what happened when she was three years old, but she remembers the thing with the metal knife. It was her schoolmate Tony's fault. He tricked her time and time again. Okay, maybe she was a little too gullible sometimes, but children are not always consequentialists. Kajsa has been a careful girl since school and she has rarely hurt herself. Kajsa thinks about the accident at the soccer camp when she injured her meniscus, but it was not a fatal injury and if the unicorns had come to the camp, several people would have seen them. Kajsa is now also completely sure that she did not see wrong when she saw a unicorn outside the villa when she had the intestinal obstruction. It could have been fatal. Kajsa was sure that she hallucinated when she saw the unicorn in the garden, but obviously it was there.
Kajsa thinks it's strange that Monika never told her about the unicorns even when she was in the hospital. The only thing she said about unicorns was that if reincarnation exists, she wanted to be reborn as a unicorn. Kajsa thought it was a strange wish but she can understand it now. Maybe the unicorn that saved Kajsa was Monika reborn but that doesn't match how the animal reacted when it was in the basement. If it was Monika, she should have recognized herself.
Kajsa feels that she would like to have this painting because it is so special.
"Bertil, is it okay if I take this painting home with me and put it up as a picture?"
"Of course. I think Monika would have wanted you to have it but that she had forgotten that it even existed and I had too until I saw it again. This happened 36 years ago and an incredible amount has happened since then so it's no wonder that I had forgotten it."
"Thank you so much. I wonder, am I part unicorn considering they helped me when I was born?"
"Of course you're a normal person. They only helped get Monika pregnant. The birth went just like normal."
"Okay, I was just a little confused about how much they helped Mom. It's strange, sometimes I hear Mom's voice in my head. She warned me that a car might be coming after the accident. I heard the voice before Jack and the ambulance arrived."
"Hmm. I don't know what to think about that. Maybe you two have some kind of spiritual connection."
"Or she's talking through the unicorns."
Bertil looks surprised and curious when Kajsa says that Monika might be talking through the unicorns. Maybe Kajsa is more special than Monika has said or been aware of. Bertil doesn't believe in supernatural things but he can't help but get involved when he hears what Kajsa says. Maybe there is some kind of life after death.
Jack and Göran have listened to what Kajsa and Bertil have talked about and they don't know what to believe. Göran got the impression that the unicorn was his mother when he first saw it when Jack came with it and the car, but later in the evening that changed. But Göran can't shake the impression that the unicorn was trying to comfort and heal him in some way. After Göran received an electric shock when he touched the unicorn's horn, he changed and he realized that he had to take care of his life and change himself. It was only then that he realized that Bertil was right about the move and Göran promised himself to do his best at work but change jobs later. The evening became incredibly emotional and for the first time in a very long time Göran cried like a child. He had bottled up his emotions since Monika´s death but now they couldn't be stopped anymore.
Jack gives the brown folder to Bertil.
"I don't know if you want it, but here's the folder with Monika's other paintings. I think you might want to put some of them up as paintings or something."
"Thank you. I'll look through it and see which ones I want to keep, but I probably won't put them up until after I've moved because I want to see how the paintings fit into the apartment first. If you or Kajsa want, you can give me some taste advice and tell me which paintings fit best, but as I said, it'll be after we move in that case."
Kajsa feels like she has to take a break and go to the bathroom, and she excuses herself and goes down the ladder. Kajsa puts the painting with the unicorns above the coffin and goes to the bathroom. When she's finished, she opens the back door to the living room. Kajsa stands looking out into the forest, listening to the small sounds of the forest and the sound of the light wind, and she thinks about what she's found out. Things are more complicated than she thought. Kajsa sighs loudly and thinks that it is better to focus on what is current now and not think about what has been. She can't change the past, but she may be able to change the future. Kajsa closes the back door and goes back up to the attic.
Jack is back at the big bookshelf and there are only a few magazines left and most of them belong to Kajsa but there are also a few that must belong to Monika. Kajsa goes over and looks at the magazines and they are girls' pop magazines from the late 1980s and some gossip magazines from the same time. At the very bottom are some weeklies from the 1960s. Kajsa has no interest in the pop magazines or gossip magazines and decides that they should be thrown away. She doesn't want to save on a lot of things that she doesn't use and none of these magazines are interesting. The old and dusty weeklies are thrown away. Bertil is guaranteed to have no interest in them. Now the bookshelf is completely empty and the question is whether it is worth saving. Kajsa looks at the bookshelf carefully and concludes that it is worn out and will probably not be used again. To be on the safe side, Jack goes to Bertil and asks if the bookshelf should be saved and Bertil agrees that it can be thrown away.
Jack and Kajsa help each other carry the bookshelf down and take down the first two full garbage bags. They get two new garbage bags and go to the next thing in the attic and it is a hanging clothes storage. Most of the clothes have belonged to Kajsa and Jack. Most of the clothes are in good condition and both Kajsa and Jack believe that they can be donated to a second hand store instead of being thrown away, Kajsa finds a sparkling mint green dress that she has only worn once and she wonders why she bought it. The dress wasn't even comfortable. Kajsa and Jack take out all the clothes and they take them downstairs and put them in a huge storage box that will contain everything to be given to second hand store. Then they go back up to the attic and continue cleaning.
Göran goes to Jack and Kajsa and he brings the plastic bag with Jack's toy cars.
"Jack, is this something you're going to save?"
"No, you can have them if you want or donate them to a second-hand store. I don't have any toys at home and they just take up unnecessary space."
"Okay, then I'll donate them. I'm not sure if I want to save my Transformers figures."
"Have you missed and looked for them?"
"No. I remember them but thought they were thrown away."
"My advice to you is that you donate them. If you haven't thought about them in years, it's probably nothing you'll use. That's how I think about my things."
"Well, I thought they might have some nostalgia."
"That thing about nostalgia and stuff. I think you're kidding yourself."
"Maybe you're right. I'll donate them."
Göran goes over to Bertil and continues to clean out the right side of the attic while Jack and Kajsa clean out the left side. Not much is saved. Kajsa laughs at the hysterically colorful clothes she wore when she was young. Those colors doesnt suit her anymore. Several of the sweaters have padded shoulders and that was fashionable back then, but Kajsa remembers that the shoulder pads often became crooked after they had been washed a few times and often got in the way. In addition, they often itched on the skin. Jack finds several comic books but they are torn and is thrown away.
Several hours pass and everyone in the attic is starting to get hungry and they take a much-needed food break. Bertil bought a large exotic plank the day before and there is a lot of food left so he takes it out and the potato salad that Jack bought. The whole family sits in the kitchen and eats. Kajsa can't help but look out the kitchen window to see if any of the unicorns are visible but they are probably at the cave. Kajsa wants to meet the unicorns but she feels it can wait until tomorrow when the attic cleaning is finished. Kajsa notices that Göran is more talkative than he usually is and it makes her happy that he seems to be enjoying himself.
Suddenly Kajsa feels someone looking at her and she turns her head and sees Jack sitting and looking at her. They look at each other and finally Jack starts talking.
"Sorry, but I didn't want to interrupt while you were eating. Well, I'm wondering. I heard that you and Monika went on a spontaneous road trip a week or so before she visited the hospital for the first time and I'm curious where you went."
"Oh, we went to Åhus. We bought an ice cream and went down to the quay and they had a small market there but we didn't buy anything and we sat down at a bench near the sea."
"Then you must have been there when it was Åhus market. The market is the week after midsummer."
"Yes, that's right. It was then. So they have a market then? We didn't see any sign about a market."
"Because the market is so small, they don't advertise it. A work colleague lives there and he told me about the market."
"Oh, I see. The weather was wonderful that day."
"Mmm. You and mom sometimes went on little road trips. I'm a little jealous. She never called and asked if I wanted to come."
"But you were at home doing other things, weren't you? Didn´t you take a spontaneous trip to Gothenburg or am I completely wrong?"
"Nah, that trip was already planned a long time ago. I've done very few spontaneous trips."
"Neither have I, except with my mother. It was something we did together."
Kajsa remembers what she and her mother talked about when they were sitting at the dock and she became curious about that boat purchase, but she guesses that Bertil doesn't want to buy a boat now that Monika is dead. Kajsa doesn't want to remind Bertil of what they had planned so she doesn't tell him what Monika said.
Jack fills his plate with more food and Göran giggles.
"I see you're hungry."
"Well, I've been going up and down the ladder with a lot of things and that takes a lot of energy. You haven't been down the ladder as many times."
"What are we going to do tonight when the attic cleaning is finished?"
"Well, good question. Maybe we can play a game together or sit and chill and watch TV. I don't remember the last time we played a game together. It's usually been that everyone has been sitting with their mobile phones and iPads."
"The internet is so exciting. You never know what you'll find."
"Maybe."
Göran starts talking about things he has found on the internet but no one seems interested. Jack interrupts Göran and starts talking about some of his nice work colleagues and the rest of the family listens with great interest. Jack is a good storyteller and he makes simple events into something bigger but he doesn't exaggerate. Göran seems irritated at first that he is being interrupted but he participates in the conversation and asks questions.
The family continues eating and when they are full, Jack takes out the chips but no one wants to eat them right now. They are good to nibble on when they are playing a game together or watching TV. Bertil cleans up and puts the plates in the dishwasher while Jack and Kajsa go up to the attic again. It has become chilly because the fire in the tiled stove has gone out but they see that there are not many things left in the attic. Göran comes up to the attic and he sings along to the song that is playing on the stereo and Kajsa can't help but giggle because Göran fails to hit all the notes in the song. His singing sounds very fake.
Bertil comes up to the attic after 20 minutes and the last bookshelves and cupboards are emptied of their contents. Just as planned, the whole family meets in the middle of the attic and now only the Christmas things are left and the empty bookshelves and cupboards. Bertil looks around in surprise. He never thought they would have time to do this clean-up in one day, but they have succeeded. Now all that remains is to take down the empty bookshelves and cupboards, and Bertil has already decided that they should be thrown away because they are in poor condition. The Christmas stuff will also be taken down, but they will be saved.
Göran is assigned to take down the Christmas stuff and he puts it in the laundry room. Jack and Bertil help take down the bookshelves while Kajsa takes down the cupboards and everything is put in the old storage room in the basement. The storage room is soon full of things, but Jack has already decides that he will rent a trailer tomorrow and throw as much as they can into the landfill. Since it is Sunday tomorrow, the landfill has limited opening hours.
Göran pulls out the plug for the lamp and throws it up in the attic and then he locks the attic hatch with the help of the large flat chisel. Now no one needs to go up in the attic except when the villa is to be shown to buyers. Göran takes out the ladder and places it outside the villa. Jack and Kajsa go out into the living room and they look for a game to play the bookshelf where they are and they find a game that they haven't played in a long time and it's called Pop Genius. The game involves the players answering questions about different pop and rock groups and everyone in the family likes music and knows about different pop and rock groups so the game can be fun. Göran comes out into the living room and Kajsa shows him the game and he is hesitant at first but promises to try to play the game but first he plans to put more fire in the tiled stove so that it will be warm in the living room. Göran feels a bit frozen and it is zero degrees outside.
Göran goes to get wood from the boiler room and Bertil comes into the living room and Kajsa shows Bertil the game and he thinks it might be fun to play. Jack starts clearing the living room table so that they have a good place. Kajsa chooses a different playlist and now it's a little rockier music. Kajsa knows that Bertil also likes this music. Göran comes back and starts a new fire in the tiled stove and Bertil goes to help him. When the fire crackles, Bertil gets some whiskey and pours it into a glass and he puts it on the table. Bertil goes down to the basement and gets a beer each for those who want one. Jack and Göran would like to have a beer but Kajsa chooses a soft drink instead.
Kajsa lowers the volume on the stereo and the whole family sits down at the living room table and starts playing Pop Genius and they all think it's great fun. It's been a long time since the family did anything together and Kajsa has missed this. It also means that she doesn't sit thinking about what her mother did. Göran tries to cheat and is told off by Jack. Bertil is best at answering when it comes to older artists and groups, while Kajsa is best when it comes to modern artists and groups. In the end, Kajsa gets the most points and Göran, who gets the least points, gets frustrated but he calms down after a while. It's just a game and not bloody serious.
Darkness has settled outside the villa and everyone in the family is tired. Therefore, they decide to go to bed earlier after they have finished playing. Bertil gets sheets and a duvet cover that Kajsa can borrow as she sleeps over but she doesn't want help making the bed. Kajsa wants it in a special way. Jack remembers that they never ate the chips but that they can do it tomorrow. The first to go to bed is Göran and the last is Bertil. Bertil and Göran sleep in the basement while Jack and Kajsa sleep upstairs. Kajsa lies down and looks at the painting before she turns off the light. Monika was a really good artist and if she had wanted to she could have made money from her art but she never sold it. The bed that Kajsa borrows is incredibly comfortable and it doesn't take long before she and the rest of the family fall asleep.
