It all happened so fast. A cycle shorter than most, he thought they’d have time. Time to get food, at least.
First a rumble, then the trickling. It was upon them sooner than he expected. Scrambling to find cover, the nearest shelter, anything to keep them safe. To keep his pack safe, if he were not to make it.
But one by one, the numbers dwindled. A wrong turn, a jump too short. Before there was even time to process the losses, he was followed only by one of his pack. The shelter was close now. Within sight, within reach...
But it was too late, they had taken too long, just by a moment. He could only watch, helpless, as the downpour beat on the other lizard harder and harder.
Then they slipped. Their body dragged down by the torrent.
But the sound is what haunted him the most. A wailing, desperate and pleading, sucked into a void of water and drowned by deafening static.
Nothing could have saved them. He couldn’t have done anything.
At least, that’s what he tells himself.
