This is one that hits home for me. I spent yesterday Mom-sitting while my Dad visited with one of his sisters for probably the last time (she's 93).
Mom has dementia and is an invalid to boot. She remembers my name, but forgets I'm her son sometimes. She fades-out while you're talking to her so you're saying things over and over. She'll keep asking the same questions half a dozen times and then start over with the same question half an hour later.
My Dad is also starting to show signs of losing his short-term memory. Their *physical* health is good enough that they'll probably outlive *me*. I'm worried about what will happen to them.

and so it goes Olde... my father was exactly like that. My brother took care of him, and it was not easy. My grandmother went the same way, but fortunately for me, I apparently do not have the gene for it. It is tough. My mother-in-law stayed with us until the end.

I've seen members of my extended family struck by this affliction. The last time I saw one uncle before he passed we were all sitting around the kitchen table and he suggested we introduce ourselves and tell a little bit about ourselves. Of course we all humored him but I could still see the pain in my aunt's eyes.
I hope my folks don't head down that path.
