The only way to triumph over fear is to immerse yourself in its cause. Karen has finally found the courage to face her unending nightmares of death. Now she must delve deeper, to find out what is really going on when her eyes close at night. Honestly, at first i thought this story was gonna be a depressing tale where the good guys dun win and more horrible stuff happens. But now i see a glimmer of hope for these kids.
What is your plan Alex Reynard? What inspiration shall you bring to the table for the next chapter?

Pshaw! I'd never do a story like that! I effing HATE stories that serve no purpose but to emotionally manipulate the reader into pointless depression. Why do people even write shit like that!? Send out the Zoloft trucks.
And what's my plan? Heck, it's not in my hands. Ask Karen, she knows what's going on much better than I do. ;)

Ooooo, I'd actually seen that before and it creeped me the fux out. Yeesh.

I do so enjoy foreshadowing. And too, in another of my novels I introduced a supernatural element rather suddenly and a lot of people thought it happened TOO abruptly. So this time I tried to telegraph right from the start that there's weird shit goin' on at King's O.
Actually, Keith has the power to kill a yak from 200 yards away ...WITH MIND BULLETS!!! That's telekinesis, Kyle.
(Guess that reference!)

I thought he was a Pyro >.>...due to the warm feelings made me think of someone who practices pyrokinesis and that he was going to make brad spontaniously combust....which could be kinky if you added in some toon TNT stuffed into quite a few different orifaces along with abit of mallating...hehe
Well, I am in slightly less of a position to comment since I read a certain other of your works first in which the key concept from Down in the Dumps was mentioned. All the same I think that you forshadowed it in a few places, what with her not saying WHY they had made the purchase, and the giggling when two certain subjects were stated to be "completely unrelated". If you are worried about it you could rewrite to have her shower him with gifts a little bit before you did the big picnic scene, but it is up to you. "Look at all this stuff I found for you while you were in school today!"
take a stab at the 4 mains powers
i think Brad is like logan [wolverine] from the X men, ya know near instantaneous healing [or something along those lines] i know what karan can do already...shes a medium wooooooo, lessi tyler is a can astral project himself....maybe....and as for holly..............i have no idea what so ever

SPLEE~! I'd been waiting on Book Two on eggshells, and believe me, I nearly read it all the first day you posted. However, I recognized I was reading too fast and took it to work with me to enjoy (via PSP and some hacking).
I gotta say, well worth the wait. Always-Jimmy-Never-James is a prime example of a device you do amazingly well at- the menacing character turned good guy. He's got this level of casual cool about him that he retains even in the unflattering stage of death, and I just find myself grinning whenever he's in the scene.
Ahh, but the story is about the children. And damn, I'm loving their progression. Karen started my favorite and has retained this position more and more each paragraph; she has the feel of someone who has a lot of mistaken ideas about herself, but knows just how to treat and understand others. Quite close to home. I like her so much I nearly couldn't get a hold of myself when Brad pushed her down; it was a good thing he apologized. XD
I'm starting to wonder about a number of characters, now. Is Keith actually the purveyor of fire? Will he turn out to be an antagonist? Does Monsoon know anything about his employer, or do they keep him in the dark? What did Alf mean when he referenced himself in comparison to 'everyone else like' him? Is Tyler really a genius? And finally... what darker secret is Holly holding back?
I'm on the edge of my seat. Keep 'em coming! I swear, I'll bribe you with fanart as long as you don't quit!

I've made the mistake of reading some of the Harry Potter books too fast and then a month later I can't remember 80% of what happened.
Glad you liked Jimmy. I swear, hearing Jason Lee's voice in my head speaking his lines really made the character burst with life. Jason played both Brodie in Mallrats and Azrael in Dogma, remember; bits of both are definitely in Jimmy. However, most of Jimmy is based on some of the darker parts of myself I chose to personify to understand better. There is *much* more to him than he's letting us know just now.
Glad you like Karen. She's, of course, parts of me too. As is Brad and virtually all the others (Beatrix and Thurston are _not_, BTW). Karen is kinda like me when I was first getting out of my abusive childhood. Oddly enough, even though she's locked up, she's freer now than she's ever been. She just hasn't fully grasped that yet.
Gosh, how many of these questions can I answer without giving away elements of Book Three? Keith is still a wild card for now. Monsoon definitely does NOT have anything to do with Beatrix's plans. He's a good guy through and through, so no worries there. Alf's secret will become crystal clear in Book Four. And as far as Holly, ask yourself; why was she sent to King's Orchard in the first place? *smirk*
Don't worry, there is still LOTS more to go. Though if you do wanna do fanart, I'd freakin' LOVE to see it!

Amusingly enough, I noticed Jimmy saying that at exactly the same time Karen did. It's amazing how much of my funniest stuff just hits me out of nowhere.
Oh, and I realized I forgot to answer your question about Tyler. Simply put: probably. I know i was a lot like him as a kid. Hyperactive and scatterbrained. I'm so very glad I'm as talented as I am at writing; my brain woulda blown up years ago without a release valve like this. Not sure what Tyler's talent is yet, but I'm sure he'll leap into it with all the energy and passion he's got! ;)

I know what you mean about taking stories to work with you via a portable gaming device. A lot of the proofreading I did for Alex on Dangerous Lunatics was done with my Nintendo DS and an imported browser (I didn't want to wait more than half a year for it to come to the US so I imported the Japanese version last fall). I basically loaded the text file up from a Gmail attachment...then closed the DS to make it do sleep mode, which cuts off the wireless connection but keeps the page in cache so I can open it up whenever I slyly sneak off to the restroom. ;)
Oh the tension! Oh the creepiness! Oh the cruelty! Oh the compassion! This left me breathless ... and really thirsting for more!
Always-Jimmy-Never-James is about to become my favourite character ... the brave, gallant, righteous guy who saves (many of) the other children, but gets killed for that. (I suspect he was caught after the rebellion, and thereafter murdered in cold blood by Dr. Beatrix ... you simply gotta love her ... NOT!)
Also, I fear that Alf is in grave danger of getting caught in warning Karen, and receiving a similar treatment as Jimmy did ... but I dearly hope and pray that I am mistaken in that.
Again, thank you for the wonderful read!
*gnawing nails, waiting for the next installment*

Glad you liked it so much! Jimmy was one of those characters where his personality is so forceful, it's almost like he was writing his scenes through my fingers without me having to do a thing.
And Alf... Well, let's just say he's not that experienced at sneaking around type stuff and is unfortunately in no way prepared for what comes next...
Hope you have some nails left by tomorrow. You'll be gnawing them again by the end of Monday!

1. I tried to leave plenty of clues laying around that this story was more than it seemed on the surface, since the kids having paranormal abilities is nowhere near the _big_ surprises to come.
2. I have seen Unbreakable, and even defended it from people who were all like 'I don't get it! It sucked!' (And by the way, amigo, I really liked Fifth Element, so up your nose with a rubber hose. ^__^) Elements of that film probly helped shape a little of DL, especially Samuel L Jackson's character.
3. Thanks very much for saying so. I'm a big fan of psychology and sociology, and I've had plenty of experience bein' crazy myself, but still I wondered if I could pull off displaying thirteen+ different kinds of mental illness. I think I did an okay job. (:
4. Really? Seriously? Neato! All I suggest is that y'all keep me in the loop. I saw this whole project as an animated Kill-Bill-esque multipart animated movie extravaganza, and tried. I even worked up a full soundtrack album. But yeah, I'd *love* to see anything you come up with! Fan art makes my heart go pitter-pat.

If he did, he'd bust a gut. :)
Same with this one.
I like how the Wikipedia article says some people think that song's evidence Mozart had Tourette's Syndrome. Isn't it a teeny bit more likely that he just had a sense of humor instead!?

Oh ol' Wolfie had a sense of humor, all right. He wrote "A Musical Joke" to parody the crap he had to write just to pay the bills. Have a listen to the end of the fourth movement - talk about dragging an ending to death! He'd probably have enjoyed this mishmash, particularly at 1:45.
A work by Paul Hindemith is pretty darn close to performance art - you have to be really good before you can do a performance that is deliberately bad.
