Conroy the Marshtomp a member of the explorers guild that's interested in investigating ancient ruins/places. I imagine him to be an NPC character that joins the player team for special mission to mysterious ruins/places, yet he always ends up activating a pitfall trap and falling down just as the Mythical/legendary Pokemon appears which means he sadly misses the encounter, which he is disappointed by, but is glad the player character is alright and that he can at least continue to study these strange ruins/places.
