This is what im thinking the dorm room of the two wives would have looked like in their first year of university. They weren't wives back then, and, in fact, hardly talked to each other until the spring semester. Maybe's bed, on the right here, was well kept and folded, KJ provided juxtaposition by sleeping haphazardly on her couch instead of climbing up to her actual bed.

At this point in their lives, the two held at least a mild contempt for each other. KJ, at that point before her detransition, sported a mullet, big glasses, and a high school sweetheart who didn't end up as her roommate. Maybe maintained a dutiful attitude and broad naivety, and kept their neuroses buried. KJ took up talking to maybe after her boyfriend dumped her for her general lack of integrity, and a traumatic event brought the two closer together.
