Um, I'm not sure what you mean by interplay. I grew up doing traditional oil paints, so the process I follow is pretty traditional. Mostly I draw what I see, but I do some sketchy outlines first to get a feel for where I'm going. With oils I would do the shadows first and build up from there, but with digital I do it kinda opposite usually starting with midtones.
