Androids/robots are or course people made of metal, but only those with “the grey goop” are truly sentient, the affectionately named grey goop is synthetic neurons, slimelike, stored in a tank in the electronic being, often in the head.

This makes them able to take head blows with more ease as these unique neurons are free flowing and without flesh, but if the tank is damaged enough to break the consequences could be dire.
