For those of you who have been reading my story (if you haven't been, you can start here: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/5136447 ), in the hopes that it will resolve some of the bafflement when I use customised racial names

Map: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/6231401/ (a map of the island on which the story occurs)
Magic Wheel: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/5521362/ (how magic is broken down into various elemental schools, and what sort of spells will appear in each)
Why Custom Races?
This was a careful decision some years ago, after realising that the classic furry world with its potential hundreds of species is actually really bad for maintaining population numbers. Species identity can only be maintained if there's no interbreeding between them, and if only 1 in 100 people is compatible with you, it's a real pain, and romance is dead because you don't really have much choice. And you have the question of what do you replace the local wildlife with if all species are now bipedal and sentient. All that just made my brain hurt.
So, to allow a more familiar environment, and to cut back on the improbability of finding two people that just happen to be the same race, I took some of my favourite species and bumped them on a few million years, and turned them into this lot
This is not to say that these are all that can exist in this fictional universe - just that they're the only known ones on the island in question. Which is only about 700 miles across, and therefore not very big in the grand scheme of everything. I also like to think there's a fair chunk of potential variety on these base races, for example leonin can come out spotted, striped, or plain, vulpani might have a more sandy colour, and sciurel vary from red to grey.
Oh, and there's dragons. But not many.

Officially, all people are equal, whatever their parentage.
Unofficially, my world is just as gritty as the real one; racial tensions do exist, not all people are equal, and sticking out awkwardly is rarely a good thing for personal happiness.
That said, Feral seems to keep meeting older women who find him strangely cute... I should fit him with a "cougar bait" tshirt xD

Love the thought you put into all this. Even the generally hand-waved aspects of the anthro world! It does get really confusing when you assume ALL animals are anthros because then you get very interesting and potentially disturbing questions like what/who carnivores eat or where everyone gets cheese from.
I'm quite fond of the illustrations as well. They're all simple, yet carry a lot of character, you use the props very well, every single one of them has interesting and well done balance in their poses, and they're all so friendly and cute! I'm not sure why, but the lutrani's by far my favorite. She's so welcoming and adorable!
I wish I'd seen this before I started reading. I spent a good deal of chapter 1 trying to deduce what the heck a muscai was. :P

Lol, sorry - I think there is a bit of introduction about each race as we meet them, but maybe I should link this on every chapter page :)
And indeed, the limited number of races is actually really helpful. It solves the predation problem, solves the Redwall cheese issue, allows use of some animals as transport, and vastly increases the chances of two characters just happening to be a compatible species! Not that being different races seems to be a guarantee of keeping two of them apart...

Haha, I'm pretty sure you did link it on most chapters. I actually pulled the story from your website and was reading it without internet at the time. I even tried pulling your sheet on the races, but the image was too big to load on the connection I had while in Africa. ^^
I actually did wonder a little about there being so few half-races. At first, I assumed given Feral's treatment, there must be social pressures at work, but then Cass and Thor came along without even mentioning such an issue (though they're probably more open minded than most) and a surprising number of people were actually friendly to Feral. At the moment, the theory I'm going by in my head is that most people simply aren't attracted to people of a completely different species, or that while half-races are possible, they aren't very common due to some genetic thing. ^^

That would be pretty much it :) I have the chances of a mixed race child as being very very low - if for no other reason than that if it was common, the world would long ago have ended up with 1 generic furry race (as an example, about 4% of our DNA has Neanderthal roots, despite us being considered Homo Sapiens. Neanderthal's weren't wiped out, they were interbred with us until their distinguishing characteristics blended in with the wider population.)
Reckoned the result would be that people on the whole would be open to flirtations with any race that fits their aesthetic sense, but that by and large would seek a life partner who has a decent chance of actually being able to raise a family. A general "get away from that boy/girl!" attitude might be expected from parents as they seek to nudge their offspring towards more genetically compatible partners, but here and there would be inevitable racial snobs who simply couldn't abide the idea of socialising with <race x> let along having any kind of relationship with them. And of course we have those who'll bonk anything that seems like fun because they aren't looking for anything serious anyway xD

Makes lots of sense! My tendency of pondering of inane details is now satisfied. Huzzah! :D
I think I'll stop though, because I'm getting that funny feeling in the back of my brain that I get when things are being over-thunk. You know the one you get when you're talking about how it's stupid that in Generations the deflector shield harmonics are at a constant frequency when it specifically says in the technical manual (and everyone knows) that the Enterprise's deflector shield harmonics change frequency over a time interval, so the movie got it totally wrong, and then suddenly you get this tingling sensation in your head that tells you you're just about to get clobbered by the next jock that walks by. Yeah, that feeling. ^^;

I used to get that... More recently I encounter someone acting like an ass and ponder whether I should kick him in the back or the front of his knees. I think working out actually changes your subconscious thought patterns... you get more aware of your own strength and kind of know you could apply it ¬_¬
Working out probably doesn't change your thought patterns so much as it simply teaches you about your own capabilities. Most people I know who do so regularly can instantly tell when something's wrong with them because there's that aware of where their limits should be. This is a good thing. It can teach you confidence without over-confidence, how to push your limits safely, and finally, one hopes, in learning your strength, you learn why there needs to be so much care before applying it.
This sounds like really epic lore. Because I love original fantasy worlds <3 <3
The more anthros, background, and just uniqueness of the world the better.
You inspired me to write again <3
I admit I haven't read your actual story yet, I apologize because
1- There are over 30-40 chapters and I really am not in the mood to start something as long as that.
2- Since I'm inspired to write a fantasy world. But I don't want to risk your world accidentally influencing mine. Which is why I don't read much fantasy on these sites. I fear that other people's ideas will blend into mine and... well I apologize. That's actually the same reason Brian Jacques "The greatest anthro author of all time, I'm sure you've read his stuff" doesn't read other writers.
But thank you <3

Hehe, good stuff, it's never wrong to start writing :)
I know it is a long story, and it's still rolling, and frankly I'm thinking about declaring it "book 1" and starting "book 2" somewhere in the near future xD Unfortunately it doesn't resolve very well yet, so I need to find a good break point...
And I do understand the point about not reading other people's works, but I feel like it's better to absorb everything than to absorb nothing. If you read (or watch, or listen to) a lot, then you are less influenced than you are inspired; if you take in a range of material, you have enough to select from such that it doesn't push you around and you instead identify the best concepts that would be good with your story. I'm sure I've heard it said that bad authors plagiarise, good authors take inspiration :)
As for Brian Jacques, I think half the users of FA must have read his books, and indeed they are lovely - to a point. Beyond that point they feel formulaic, he doesn't really explore new territory, it's just the same old bad vs good story with new characters. He had a beautifully developed world, and it has some unique takes and ideas, but it did show that he was limited to only his own imagination, where he had the opportunity to tap into hundreds or thousands of others as well.

I respect why you choose these species as the main races, if the only races. In my big project, my story Tribes, The rule is that it is carnivorous species that rose to a bi-pedal stage of evolution. Kind of like the red meat theory for early man. They can eat fruit and veg as well but they can also eat meat raw and bloody if they wanted.
