A traditional totem pole is generally carved into one side of a large cedar log. The other side of the log is often U-shaped. Sometimes they are made solid with the design all the way around.
The thickness of this tree is almost 2 ft diameter, and only the inmost part has been naturally hollowed by rotting out that very soft heart wood. So there is plenty of room for relief.
I am most likely not going to carve extremely deeply into the wood, it will be more of an extreme relief than the traditional style. :)
