This story takes from New Age concepts. There are three kinds of starsouls--Earth Angels, Starseeds, and Earth Seeds. Any of the characters that are starseeds means that in past lives, they came from other planets. Earth angels means that the characters are angelic beings that descended down into mortal bodies to spread love and light. Earth seeds are extraterrestrial souls, like starseeds, that came to Earth and decided to make Earth home base. All three have the mission of caring about the planet and making the world a better place.

NOTE: Earth souls and earth seeds are not the same. Earth souls are beings who spent their first incarnation on Earth. Earth seeds are immigrant souls who decided to stay on Earth for a while. Star souls are beings who spent their first incarnation on other planets before coming to Earth.

Gus would be a starseed. Alfonzo is an earth seed. Gloria is an earth angel.
