Drawing Tools (2025) (Response to Allegory)
hollywoodcerise just recently posted about what tools he uses for drawing, and i wanted to respond with my own! though i draw with many tools and have a very noncommittal relationship to the mediums i use, at least for right now, these are the main things ive been using in recent times, and what i used to create the drawings you probably know me by nowadays. at the moment i dont really have a consistent space that i draw in. it would probably behoove me to set that up, but i did just recently move.starting at the bottom row of tools,
-colored pencils: i use a box of prismacolors that was gifted to me by a friend, and i've used the same pencils since then, only changing out a couple or buying new ones a few times. they do tend to rack up a high price. i enjoy using colored pencils as a tool for sketching occasionally, but of course, i also will sometimes finish a whole drawing with them.
-various cheap brushes: these kinda shoddy brushes are what i use for gouache and watercolor pieces. i enjoy watercolor/gouache as a medium more than anything else right now. i do think i would benefit from some nicer brushes, but for the crappy ones, i dont feel bad about mistreating them, which helps me to reduce the stress of working in paint (already quite stressful on its own). they are of various brands that i dont remember, it doesnt really matter.
-pencils, mechanical pencils, eraser: i always need these around, obviously, i enjoy working in graphite, but i rarely finish in it. it is always fun when i do though. for a full graphite piece, ill usually use these tombow pencils or whatever i have on hand, working down the hardness scale as i finish, of course. i prefer them for that because i can use them sharp or dull, on their point or on their side, they have more variability that i find fun. if i'm sketching for a piece that i intend to finish in another medium, i will usually use a mechanical pencil like the ones in the picture. i have one thats more thin and light and one thats bigger and darker. they make good fidget toys when i feel like chewing on something. youll notice the bite marks on most of the tombow pencils too. dont judge me.
-micron pens: these are basically all i use for inking anymore. most of them are out of ink or about to run out. i kind of appreciate the look of a micron pen thats just barely holding on, or which as a fucked up nib, so i keep them around, usually to my detriment, when i cant find the ones that work right. theyre certainly looking shoddy and dusty here.
at the top,
bag of paints: extremely random selection of various paints from various brands, some watercolor some gouache. (i mix them sometimes. i have not yet discovered a case where this caused problems, so i continue doing it.) these are all of pretty high quality honestly and i like them a lot, i just dont go out to buy new paints very often so i dont have every color i'd like to own right now. sometimes i also use a tray watercolor set which isnt in the picture. yay for paint!
pencil bag, etc: all my pencils and pens. i have various other pens, brush pens, ballpoint pens, different felt tips, ill sometimes use them on a whim but i usually stick to the microns. in here is also the random other stuff i sometimes use for fun, like crayons and crayola twistables which actually belong to Allegory.
that is about all that compromises 99% of my art at the moment. of course theres also the whole discussion about paper. i just moved to a place where i can no longer find the sketchbooks i really like using. i might have to find an online retailer to get me the Bee Pen Sketcher again.
if you do "traditional" art too, you should also post your tools. @ allegory or me and we can do a chain thing. lalalalala.
