"Hold up, hold up," Rangy wiggled on his bare knees, ring-striped tail lashing as he scoured about Elain's sedan. "Aha!"
Crawling out of the trunk, the shirtless iguana hoisted his prize—a bright blue towel. Leg dropping down with reckless abandon, his first footfall missed his flimsy insoles, striking instead the black hotness of the beach parking lot. He winced, though rather than with pain, he found the spark numbing and soothing—a hopeful portent of sun-laying fun.
"Hurry up, Timothy!"
"I'm'a'comin'!"
The second attempt found purchase, and with another leg out of the back, Rangy's nailed digits dug into his shed sandals, his scales rubbing against the lone leather straps. Slamming the trunk hatch behind him, he paraded his prize overhead, swirling the towel about like a running propeller as the iguana spied his confidant.
Elain, fingers interlocked and resting against her hips, meekly smiled from the parking lot edge. Matching Rangy's beach-going orange swim trunks, her folding bikini of velvety purple clashed against her pale white fur and toasted edges. Pinning her bobbing hair to her cheeks, a straw sun hat shielded her face, casting a harsh shadow as the sun lorded overhead.
Rangy's sandals flopped from asphalt to sand, reuniting the pair, and as they picked up their other beach supplies and strolled down the soft dune incline, they wobbled a bit as the firmer sand loosened to the wider ocean front, the beach yielding to their steps.
"Ugh," Rangy flexed his calves, "hate this part; like movin' across molasses."
Elain did not disagree, instead turning her head down and huffing as she struggled to flex muscles long laid dormant. Still, they pressed on, finding a quiet spot apart and beyond eavesdropping and errant intrusions. A bit winded, they shirked their supplies to the sand, laying out their foundation of towels, umbrella, and a mini-cooler.
Rolling his shoulders, Rangy reverse-gripped his towel and asked, "ready for a swim, darlin'?"
"I was hoping we could just...enjoy the sands a bit first. Rest easy and soak in the gilded light."
"Alright, alright. I'll get my wet quota for a future moment. As for sun bathin', you plan on gettin' a lot'a sunlight from beneath an umbrella [\i]AND[i] that little hat'a yours?"
"I need the shade, Timothy; otherwise, my...my everything would burn bright as an apple."
"Snrk; and here I thought it was only pluses for furry folks."
"Oh, you card," she chuckled, "it's hair, not a super power."
"Uh-huh," the reptile nodded, readjusting his trunks and smirking. "Just always a positive whenever we're in the cold, or dealin' with a touch'a touchin', or—"
Elain snorted, gently pushing against Rangy's chest and abating his teasing. Elain, setting a clawed hand against her hat, spied the horizon, her shining green eyes shutting to bask in the foaming glow. Rangy glanced to the sand, seeing the fine grains glistening in the sun's warming rays: a strange yet familiar heat from the deserts around Mirabeu. Without thinking, the pair breathed in, then out.
"A lovely day for us."
"Fine day ta' be."
