"Honey, a new friend of mine is on his way as we speak, would you like to join the kids and I for a ride on his zeppelin?" Big doting husband James was in a great mood, leaning his towering bulk against a tall sturdy bookshelf as he addressed his pretty mule wife. Lonely went to answer him and her eyes grew surprised. She flew her hand over her mouth as a gagging belch escaped her and with a red face and gasped apology, rushed to the bathroom down the hall.
"Honey! Oh my gosh, you poor little thing! Faline my dear, can you please have Chef Clancy brew Lonely a mug of ginger tea with honey, I'll go and fetch one of Monty's stomach-soothing potions from his room." James asked the couple's maid, as he rushed to the closed bathroom door. Faline nodded and hurried to do as the big man had asked with a verbal acknowledgement.
When Lonely emerged from her vomiting episode minutes later, she looked better but tired from the ordeal, and she rested atop the couple's large bed and thanked James as he sat by her and handed her a warm cup of ginger tea.
"I put a few drops of our son's anti-nausea potion into that for you, sweetheart. I've also called a nurse to look after you for a bit. If you like her, we can keep her if you wish. I can't go out and have fun knowing my sweet mare doesn't feel well. There, now. Are you any better, darling?" James asked in a voice heavy with concern and tenderness, stroking Lonely's face with his hand. She sighed and closed her eyes leaning into his touch and kept sipping her tea.
"Oh yes my love, thank you so much for this yummy tea & for Monty's potion, it's already helping me. I do wish to come meet your friend my love, I wished I wasn't so poorly all of a sudden out of nowhere too! I'll send Faline out with you & our babies to offer all of you my fresh lemonade. Chef Clancy has mastered my recipe so perfectly! Oh, please excuse me." Lonely accidentally burped again and blushed for her unladylike slip, covering her mouth. James kissed her forehead and mouth, slipping his hand under her chin; she shivered and moaned, always enchanted by him.
"You are every bit as charming, even when you don't feel your best, my sweet rose. Ahhh, this must be the nurse who's come to look after my darling. I'm James, welcome. Please, see to her utter care, and if she or you need anything, my servants are available, just ring this bell." James showed the human nurse the little golden bell he used to summon staff on his grand desk.
"Very well, Mr LightningSword. You'll find I am strict but good at my job. My only request is your wife obeys my instructions." The older nurse said seriously. James thought to himself, as behind him Lonely gave a kind nod of agreement at the woman.
"You will be kind to my wife?" James asked in a tone that was more of an order, handing the woman a large bag of gold and silver.
"Do not worry my love, I shall do as she asks, let us give her a try. Don't let me keep you, sweetheart. Oh, there's cookies for the kids too in the kitchen! I'll have them sent out with the lemonade." Lonely burped again and excused herself, belching into a beautiful hankerchief politely. James fussed over his mare as the nurse came up and shooed him out.
"I will ensure she is monitered and cared for at each moment. Go." The nurse insisted. Reluctantly, James obeyed, mouthing to Lonely he loved her and blowing her kisses, seeing her do the same sentimentally as her new caregiver sat on the bed and began to check the equine woman's vitals. Satisfied that his precious flower was in capable hands, James strode proudly outside, calling his children to please join him.
The air hummed and the ground rumbled as James watched with a dignified, pleased smile and burly arms folded as his 5 kids pointed with awe at the big zeppelin approaching their manor. A long & wide rope ladder unfurled from the craft as it lowered, & James leapt into the air with a mighty flap of his wings and push of his brawny legs & now flying, he helped each of his kids up into his new friend's airship until they all were inside.
"Hey there kids. Your dad has told me all about you. We met at the gentlemen's social club. I'm Captain Amos Spanswick, & this is my zeppelin, The Bluebird. Your dad & I thought you children might like to take a ride & do a little steering. Who says yes?" Amos bent down on his haunches, & James' two oldest boys and their friend, the couple's adopted 5th child Tom, stepped forward and eagerly raised their hands.
James looked ever proud & very pleased.
"I thought you might want to. Brucey, Monty, Tommy. Okay, up you go, here's a stool." James slid a step stool as the boys took turns steering the airship with Amos behind them supervising as the craft did long ovals about James' property. James' daughter and feminine son Marty clung to their father shyly, interested but a little meek at the manly prospect. James let the younger kids cling to him and gave them many kisses and little rubs of comfort, helping the two to relax & look about.
"This is cool, no, I wanna do it!" Thomas shrieked, not having the manners of his siblings. He yanked the wheel from Simon and the craft lurched; James caught Henrietta and Martin with his hands as they started to fall forward and pulled them close to him.
"Easy there Tommy, please listen to Amos, let's respect his flying machine now, please. He was kind enough to take us for a ride." James corrected warmly in his usual very gentle style.
"There, that's better, boys. Even it out." Amos said, as he showed the three boys standing on the stepstool the proper course to steer ahead and the ship leveled off. They were now gently crusing away from the manor. After letting the boys have a nice long turn, James picked Henrietta and Martin up to his massive shoulders and walked them up to Amos.
"Henri, Marty, want to try?" James offered.
"Yes daddy, if you make sure I do it well." Henrietta replied shyly. James beamed up at her with adoration.
"Okay." Martin agreed, following his best friend's lead.
"No, we aren't done. Besides, this is a man's job." Tom sassed, hogging the wheel.
"Let them have a turn, Tommy. You & I can play slingshot in the back while Henri and Marty go." Bruce offered gallantly.
"Yes, what a grand idea, son." James said proudly, patting Bruce's beefy little shoulder.
"No." Tom muttered.
"Now son, you have to share." Amos said, picking Tom up with a heave and setting him down off the stepstool. Tom cursed and ran off to pout, Bruce going after him.
"I'll go soothe him in just a moment, here you go, Henri honey, stand here, princess. There you go Marty, right next to Henrietta. Great job! Oh, now, look what a careful pilot you are!" James folded his monstrous arms and grinned with immense fatherly pride at his daughter and son as they timidly obeyed Amos's directions at the wheel, and Henrietta gave her dad a sheepish little smile.
"Unlike Tommy, huh daddy? This is a little scary but also big fun."
"You are doing so well." James leaned in and whispered with a kiss to both kids, who smiled happily, feeling encouraged.
"Look kids, birds." Amos pointed, and Henrietta and Martin marveled as they carefully shared the wheel with Amos and a flock of crows flew by the large windows outside.
"It isn't fair, your dad likes them more." Tom pouted angrily at the rear of the gondola as Bruce tried to play with and console his best friend, as Simon studied the zeppelin's internal workings with utter fascination.
"That's totally not true Tommy, dad was being super proud of us when we were steering. He's just babying Henri cause she's a little scared of this thing is all." Bruce promised, sharing some candy with Tom.
"Yeah, cause she and Marty are girls." Tom sneered.
"Shut up." Bruce teased, giving Tom a shove. The two boys started to wrestle and play fight, a common theme among them.
"Oh, your maid has brought goodies, I see. Shall we land, James?" Amos asked, also playfully leaning to ask Henrietta and Martin, who both giggled shyly.
"Yes please, go right ahead, Amos. Thank you so much again for letting the kids fly on this magnificent craft, you're too kind." James gave Amos a friendly pat that nearly bowled the tall but smaller man over, and Amos chuckled as he let Henrietta and Marty hang on to the wheel as the pilot started landing procedures.
"Daddy, is momma joining us later?" Henrietta asked sweetly. James gave his cherished girl a kind, understanding smile.
"I'm so sorry honey, mommy's tummy is too upset to fly today, daddy is so sad she couldn't join us. Don't worry honey, we'll all go up and visit mommy later on and read a story to her together. She sent cookies and lemonade for us, let's go try some for her. Boys, cookies & lemonade! Be careful getting down, use your wings. Tommy, I'll help you out." James went to pick up Tom who rushed past him and slid down the ropes of the ladder and weblike ship-style rigging with one hand.
"Wow!" James gasped, impressed.
"It's cause he likes pirates so much, he's learning knots & stuff too. Come on Henri, I'll help you and Marty down." Bruce announced, James supervised happily as his sons Bruce and Simon helped their brother and sister down to the ground on the airship's ropes and then Amos climbed down as James glided to earth on his wings, and Faline the doe maid readied an iron table for the 7 of them with sandwiches, cookies and Lonely's lemonade recipe as the happy kids came running and James and Amos strode with cheerful pride in the rear.
